Democratic Presidential Candidate and Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited the home of retired Burlington School Teachers Chris and Don Harter on Sunday as part of her 2016 presidential run.

Clinton spoke for about 20 minutes to a crowd of about 70, all packed into the Harter’s living room. With not one, but two copies of her husband Bill’s autobiography “My Life” behind her, Clinton delved into specific policies she’s advocating for on the presidential trail. One of those policies? Mandatory, automatic voter registration.

“I was raised to believe it’s your duty, it’s your responsibility, that you should vote. [So] let’s make it as easy as we can starting with universal, automatic voter registration for every 18 year old,” said Clinton.

Clinton broke her previous silence on the controversial Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement, saying that it was a “no” vote from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi that convinced her that changes needed to be made to the agreement.

“A lot of people in Iowa think that is trade agreement is, on balance, good for Iowa because of Agriculture, and there are a lot of other Iowans who are really upset about it because they think it’s bad for all other kinds of jobs.” Clinton said, “You will not hear me line up with the ‘pro-trade’ or the ‘no trade’, because my position has always been: is it good for America, or not?”

Following Clinton’s remarks, media were quickly told to leave the room and questions from a number of reporters were ignored. Her visit followed a large rally that took place on the Des Moines State Fairgrounds earlier in the day.

The Harter’s have been Clinton supporters since 2008. Also attending the event were US Representative Dave Loebsack, former Iowa Secretary of State Elaine Baxter, and Burlington State Senator Tom Courtney.
