US Women’s Soccer Team Beats Japan, Wins World Cup

The US Women’s Soccer Team won the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since 1999 last night as they took on Japan. The US got off to a 4-0 lead in the first 20 minutes thanks in part to an early hat trick from Carli Lloyd–she was named player of the tournament. US Goalkeeper Hope Solo was given the Golden Glove for the second straight time. Final score was 5-2.

Burlington Bees fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels in Midwest League Play, 9-6.

In Major League Play, Cardinals beat the Padres 3-1. Cubs won 2-0 over the Marlins. White Sox fell to the Orioles 9-1. Royals beat the Twins 3-2. The Royals are celebrating four of their players being selected for the annual all-star game, that ties the American League Record. Outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon, Catcher Salvador Perez, and Shortstop Alcides Escobar will start for the American League.
