Governor Terry Branstad continued his 99 county tour yesterday with stops throughout Southeast Iowa.

First he headed over to Steffensmeier Welding in Pilot Grove before heading to Case-New Holland in Burlington, followed by a trip to United States Gypsum in Sperry. That’s where we caught up with him.

“I go to every county every year. One of the things I’m trying to do is go to existing business and industry and see what’s working here in Iowa,” Branstad told KBUR.

He says that every location he visited Thursday was doing something right.

“What they’re doing is creating good, quality jobs and providing opportunities for young people to stay in Iowa and get good jobs,” Branstad said, “But they’re also meeting some of the needs of our country and even some exports.”

Steffensmeier Welding is investing nearly $1 million in a solar panel project. Case New Holland is adding jobs and a new product line: Bulldozers. USG managed to remain stable, workforce-wise, during the economic downturn by taking advantage of a job-sharing program.

Today, the Governor will be in Ottumwa for the Governor’s Volunteer Awards.
