Obituaries Wednesday August 5th

Alfredo “Freddy” Rodriguez, of Burlington, Iowa, was reported missing on September 16, 2012 and found on January 22, 2015.

Born on August 3, 1963, he was the son of Ricardo and Anna Laura Paes Rodriguez in Sunnyside, Washington.

Freddy enjoyed church and “soul winning” for the Lord. He also enjoyed walking, art, pencil art portraits, Dallas Cowboy football and Christian music.
He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church.

He is survived by three daughters, Maria “Rosie” Gonzalez of Burlington, Iowa, Maria “Margie” Colon of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Maria “Anna” Rodriguez of Danville, Iowa; Maria’s mother, Maria Elena Colon Garcia; five brothers, Ricardo Rodriguez Jr., Daniel Rodriguez, Rogelio Rodriguez, Eduardo Rodriguez and Juan Rodriguez, all of Texas; three sisters, Maria Del Rosario Rodriguez, Maria Elena Rodriguez and Raquel Rodriguez, all of Texas; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Javier Rodriguez.

The graveside committal service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery, West Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Alan Miller will officiate. Those desiring to attend the graveside service should meet at Prugh Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. for the procession to the gravesite. Mabel E. Kelly, age 90, of Mediapolis, died Monday afternoon, August 3, 2015, at the Klein Center of Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. The daughter of Thomas and Marian Callahan Dotson, she was born on June 27, 1925 in Newport, Iowa. She married James L. Kelly on February 15, 1947 in Cedar Rapids. He preceded her in death on May 3, 2014.

Mabel attended Newport Country School for eight years and graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1943. She took nurses training at the Burlington Hospital and received her RN degree in 1946. She worked at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids for several years and then retired to raise her family. She returned to work as a night nurse for thirteen years at Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab, retiring in 1987.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the UMW Circle activities of Mediapolis, the Retired Nurses Association, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, reading, attending sporting activities with her husband and travelling to Seattle to see her sister. She also enjoyed trips to Baton Rouge and Dallas to visit her children. It was her family that she enjoyed the most and regularly hosted family celebrations.

Her family includes her five children, Tom Kelly of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Patty & Ed Stoller of Mediapolis, Nancy & Rick Little of Carrollton, Texas, Bill & Karen Kelly of Coralville, and Mike & Mary Kelly of Rock Island, Illinois; twelve grandchildren; and twenty-two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; a daughter, Pamela Hoschek; two sisters, Lucille and Donna; and a brother, George.

The funeral ceremony for Mabel Kelly will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 8, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church in Mediapolis with Rev. Tracey Burgus officiating. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the First United Methodist Church and the Mediapolis Community Ambulance Service.

Donna R Schmied, age 89, of Wapello, died Tuesday morning, August 4, 2015, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. The daughter of Clarence and Irene Torode Deam, she was born on March 22, 1926 in Mediapolis. Donna married Charles Edward Schmied on June 30, 1946 in Mediapolis. He preceded her in death on March 1, 1983.

Donna graduated from Mediapolis High School. She was a homemaker and a devoted Mother and caretaker for their daughter Linda Kaye for her 54 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wapello and had taught Sunday School for about 18 years. Her life centered about her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Her family includes a daughter, Jill S. Madden of Little Rock, Arkansas; a son Ed Schmied, II of West Burlington; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Jeffrey, Johanna, Tiffany, and Hunter; six great grandchildren; and three nephews, Mike Brockway, Steve Brockway, and Jeff Deam. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed; a daughter, Linda Kaye Schmied; a sister, Betty Brockway; and a brother, Bill Deam.

Cremation has been her selection. A graveside service will be held a later time at the Elmwood Cemetery in Morning Sun.

A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Rescue Unit.
