UNI Secretary Mishandled Cash Deposits

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa state auditor’s report says a University of Northern Iowa secretary deposited personal and business checks in lieu of cash donations in an effort to collect personal and business tax breaks.

The Des Moines Register reports that auditors found more than $3,000 in cash was collected but never deposited by Lori Shannon, a secretary with the Literacy Education Office. Of that, the Shannon wrote personal or business checks that were deposited in lieu of the cash totaling $2,342.

An auditor says she would hold the cash, later writing a personal check to deposit in lieu of the cash.

The report has been filed with the university’s department of public safety and with the county attorney’s office.

Shannon could not be reached Saturday for comment.
