CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois lawmakers are expected to consider a plan to spend about $5 billion in federal funds during the state budget stalemate.
Two House appropriations committees are scheduled to hold a hearing Monday on legislation unanimously approved by the Illinois Senate last week.
Most of the spending is “pass-through” money that doesn’t require state matching dollars. It’s earmarked for social service programs such as utility assistance for low-income residents, mental health treatment and job training.
Gov. Bruce Rauner said last week he approved the bill.
House lawmakers are considering adding spending to the measure. Rep. Art Turner filed an amendment to release another $25 million in federal funds for affordable housing.
Rauner and Democratic legislators have been unable to agree on a budget for the fiscal year that started July 1.
