Obituaries Tuesday August 11th

Roger Paul Garland, age 68, of Mediapolis, died Sunday morning, August 9, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The son of Charles and Alice Randoll Garland, he was born on May 12, 1947 in Morning Sun. Roger married Connie Hutcheson on March 30, 1968 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He graduated from Morning Sun High School in 1965. Roger graduated from Burlington Business College and served in the US Army. He began his career with JI Case as an accountant and retired after 42 years as an IT Specialist.

Roger loved fishing and woodworking and following all of his children and grandchildren in their various activities. He was a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa making his family his number one priority.

His family includes his wife, Connie; two daughters, Michele & Rusty Orr of Mediapolis and Brenda & Jeff Jarrett of West Branch; a son, Ryan & Sara Garland of Middletown; seven grandchildren, Austin, Jacob, and Caleb Orr, Courtney and Claire Jarrett, and Marley and Ethan Garland; and a brother, Marvin Garland of Johnston. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Leland.

The funeral ceremony for Roger Garland will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 13, 2015, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis. Sam Reighard will officiate. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home where the family will meet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Mildred Christine Harbison, 91, of Morning Sun, Iowa, died August 9, 2015, at the Morning Sun Care Center. Born February 12, 1924, in Cotter, IA, she was the daughter of Spencer and Winnie Peters Bell. She married Herbert (Stub) Harbison on January 8, 1944 in Cotter, Ia, and he preceded her in death on June 22, 2009. Mildred was a graduate of Cotter High School and the American Institute of Business in Davenport. Following graduation she was a secretary for Tom Perry, Attorney, of Columbus Junction, and after moving to Morning Sun in 1950 she was Co-owner and Secretary for Harbison Trucking until 1989, during which time she helped Charles Beck of Morning Sun for years prepare income tax returns for his clients, was a waitress at the Columbus Coffee House and Co-owner of the Nu-to-U store in Morning Sun. Her passion was crocheting afghans and embroidering tea towels. She was a superb cook, known for her sugar cookies, angel food cakes, deviled eggs, and custard, and loved to share with her friends (young & old) and her family. Above all, she cherished her time spent with family, good friends and neighbors, and loved her car rides with a special friend Dee to get her McDonald’s fish sandwiches and DQ sundaes. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, the Morning Sun Legion Auxiliary, and TT Club.
Survivors include one son, Tom (Sherry) Harbison, one daughter, Ann (Doug) Lee, all of Morning Sun, five grandsons, Mike (Wendy) Harbison of Wapello, Jim (Darcy) Harbison of Morning Sun, Tom (Michelle) Harbison of Riverside, Eric (Lora) Lee of Muscatine and Nick Lee of Morning Sun; 9 great-grandchildren, Mike, Kayla, Lilly, Kayla, Hannah, Zach, Logan, Caedon and Gavyn; two great-great-grandsons, Liam and Noah, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son James; a brother Donald Bell and three sisters, Dorothy Kilgore, Margaret Robertson and Anita Hill.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 15, 2015, at 2:30 PM, at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun, with Chaplain Dean Graber officiating. Interment will follow at the Columbus City Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 PM Friday at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Morning Sun, where the family will meet with friends from 6-8 PM.
A memorial has been established for the Centenary United Methodist Church of Morning Sun and the Morning Sun Community Center.
