Police: Intoxicated Keokuk Man Knocks Over Stop Sign, Steals It

A temporary stop sign has been placed at the intersection of Highway 61 and 255th St. in Montrose on Wednesday after police say an intoxicated man lost control of his vehicle and ran into a stop sign before loading it into a vehicle and stealing it.

A witness saw Matthew W. Land, age 52, of Keokuk, headed east bound at the intersection of Highway 61 and 255th St., Wednesday afternoon, when he failed to maintain the curve and struck the raised curb.

Land proceeded through the curb and struck the stop sign at the intersection uprooting it from its foundation, the witness saw Land remove the damaged sign and place it into the back of his heavily damaged white van that included three other passengers. The witness then alerted the Lee County Sherriff’s Office of the incident. A Lee County Deputy spotted the white van with smoke coming from the engine and performed a traffic stop placing Land under arrest for OWI.

A temporary stop sign has been placed at the intersection, no injuries were reported.
