Police in Fairfield had to evacuate a few blocks of the city after a city crew accidentally broke open a gas line on Thursday.
Fairfield Police Captain Colin Smith says the city crews were working at the intersection of 2nd and Jackson when a backhoe struck the Alliant Energy-operated gas line.
As a precautionary measure, around 30 houses were evacuated by police for fear of fire. The strike was first reported just before the 1:00pm hour on Thursday. The area was declared safe at around 2:45pm.
