Obituaries Monday August 24th

Marvin Ernest Davis, 84, of Burlington, died at 8:18 AM Saturday, August 22, 2015, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born February 25, 1931, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Ross Othela and Dolly Gertrude Schwitzer Davis. On September 27, 1980, he married Joyce Mehaffy Wagner in Las Vegas, NV.

Marvin was in the grocery business for 35 years and retired as manager of Eagle Foods in 1990.

He was a 1949 graduate of Marshalltown High School.

He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War from 1949 until 1952. He flew in C52 Cargo Planes flying out of the Azores Islands.

He was of the Christian faith. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, remodeling his home, traveling and was an Iowa Hawkeye and Green Bay Packer fan.

Survivors include wife, Joyce Davis of Burlington; four sons, Martin (Kim) Davis of Huntington, WV, Ron Davis of AZ, Michael (Karen) Wagner of West Burlington, and Terry (Julee) Wagner of Burlington; two daughters, Nancy (Gary) Haley of Burlington and Carol (David) Levins of West Burlington; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Griggs of Central City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded death by his parents, one sister, Barbara, one brother Gene, one daughter, Karin, and one granddaughter, Jessica.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends.

The memorial service for Mr. Davis will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery with full military honors rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

Memorials have been established to Great River Hospice and the Wounded Warrier Project.

Betty Jean Laughlin, 88, of Burlington, died at 7:55 AM Sunday, August 23, 2015, at Bickford Cottage in Burlington.

Born April 8, 1927, in Des Moines County, IA, she was the daughter of Jay Earl and L. Fern Short Walker. On June 12, 1946, she married Ellis Lee Laughlin in Des Moines County. He died October 2, 2014.

Betty worked at General Electric for 22 years. She retired in 1989.

She was a 1945 graduate of Danville High School.

She was a former member of Long Creek United Methodist Church and a current member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She enjoyed sewing, square-dancing, collecting, camping, birds especially cardinals, shopping, and cats. She especially enjoyed babies and spoiling her grandchildren.

Survivors include son, Larry (Diane) Laughlin of Beaufort, SC, daughter, Linda (Matt) Stanton of Russell, MN, twin sons, Steve Laughlin and Dennis (Ginny) Laughlin both of Burlington, three grandchildren, Crystal (Kevin) Rud, Mindy (John) Sutak, Levi Patton, four great-grandchildren, Dryden, Kailey, Marley Jean, and Jaxson Ellis, one brother, Harold (Nadine) Walker of Burlington, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and two grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer Stanton

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mrs. Laughlin will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor David J. Yonker officiating. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Long Creek United Methodist Church following the burial.

Memorials have been established for the Alzheimer’s Association and Great River Hospice.

Bradley Dale Shipley, 47, of Burlington, died at 12:27 PM Thursday, August 20, 2015, at his home.

Born May 18, 1968, in Burlington, he was the son of Leonard Dale and Dixie Lee Gray Shipley. On November 28, 1986, he married Sandy Sourwine in Burlington.

Brad was an estimator and project manager for Shipley Contracting of Burlington.

He was a 1986 graduate of Burlington High School and 1989 graduate of Kirkwood Community College.

He was a member of Iowa Concrete Paving Association and A.G.C. of Iowa. He enjoyed riding four wheelers, hunting, and bike riding with his children.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Shipley; three sons, Leonard Chase Shipley, Shae Bradley Shipley, and Lucus Troy Shipley, all of Burlington; one daughter, Samantha Jo “Sam” Shipley of Burlington; one granddaughter, Peyton Dale Shipley; his father and stepmother, Leonard and Barbara Shipley of Burlington; his mother, Dixie Shipley of Burlington; four brothers, Lyle Rosson of Burlington, Barry (Barb) Shipley of Burlington, Bryan L. (Gloria) Shipley of Burlington, and Marc Jacobs of Cape Coral, FL; four sisters, Pam (Rick) Haar of Minneapolis, MN, Kelley Stevenson of Fort Madison, Christy (Dennis) Meller of Fort Madison, Marley (James) Woodley of Manito, IL; and nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Visitation will be from noon until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday, August 24, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Mr. Shipley will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. Private family burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
