University of Iowa Has a New President

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The University of Iowa has a new president. The Board of Regents has selected former IBM executive J. Bruce Harreld to succeed Sally Mason, who retired last month.

Regents passed over three candidates with traditional academic experience in favor of Harreld. He says his business background will help the university during a time of change in higher education.

Harreld’s candidacy has sparked controversy. Members of the faculty complain the former IBM executive has no higher education management experience and picking him would be a major gamble.
