Obituaries Thursday September 10th

Shirley Joan Rowe, 85, of Burlington, died at 7:24 PM Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington. Arrangements are pending at the Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

Alan Robert Borden, 55, of Burlington, died at 7:05 AM Wednesday, September 9, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born July 10, 1960, in Burlington, he was the son of Harold Edward and Barbara Peterson Borden. On September 17, 1983, he married Catherine Chicken in Burlington.

Alan worked as General Manager of Burlington Municipal Waterworks since 1998 and Ottumwa Water and Hydro from 1983 until 1998.

He was a 1978 graduate of Burlington High School and graduated in 1983 from the University of Iowa with a Bachelors in Civil Engineering.

He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Burlington Noon Lions Club, Past Steamboat Days President and board member, Eagle Scout, and a member of American Waterworks Association. He enjoyed golfing, camping on the river, and he loved the ocean.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Borden of Burlington; one daughter, Katelyn (Brandon) Orth of Burlington; one brother, Michael (Cindy) Borden of St Louis, MO; three brother-in-laws, Bob (Sue) Chicken of Burlington, Tom (Danielle) Chicken of Burlington, and David (Karen) Chicken of Waukee; three nephews, Kevin Borden, Reed (Danielle) Chicken, Jonathan Chicken; and four nieces Alicia Borden, Jessica Chicken, Anna Chicken and Sarah Chicken.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and two infant sons.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday, September 11, 2015 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St.

The funeral service for Mr. Borden will be 2:00 PM Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Messiah Lutheran Church with Reverend Susanne E. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church following the burial.

In lieu of flowers memorials have been established to Messiah Lutheran Church and Burlington Noon Lions Club.
