Since the Take Back Day event started five years ago, the DEA and its partners have taken in over 4.8 million pounds, that’s more than 2,400 tons of pills.

The DEA states that, this initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that lanquish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. The DEA also reports that the rates of prescription drug abuse in the US are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Americans are now advised that their usual methods of disposing of unused medicines like flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose both safety and health hazards.
