Obituaries Friday September 11th

Clyde Edwin Meeker, age 90, of Mediapolis, died Wednesday afternoon, September 9, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The son of Samuel Edward and Edith Eugina Whitaker Meeker he was born on March15, 1925 in rural Manito, Illinois. He married Loris Ellen ‘Susie’ Schulte on June 10, 1950 in Easton, Illinois.
He played basketball and baseball in high school and graduated from Manito High School in 1942. Clyde farmed near Manito and in March of 1959, with his wife and five children, moved to rural Oakville, Iowa to farm and raise purebred Hampshire hogs. In 1993, he and his wife moved to Mediapolis; however, he still helped on the farm and at 85 he was still hauling grain to the elevator.
Clyde was a 4-H leader for the Huron Jr. Farmers, a coach of Little League for many years and served on the levee district board. He was a member of the Kingston United Methodist Church and was an avid Cardinal and Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed John Wayne movies and bowling. Clyde was a regular as one of the Marti’s ‘Back Room Boys’.
He is survived by his wife Loris Ellen ‘Susie’; five sons, Kenneth Meeker of Savannah, Illinois, Charles Meeker of St. Charles, Missouri, Richard & Carol Meeker of Burlington, Clint Meeker of Donnellson, and Randy & Christina Meeker of Burlington; a daughter, Claudia & John Schweizer of Ft. Collins, Colorado; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two bothers, Loren Meeker and Paul & Donna Meeker both of Manito; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and two sons, Scott and William.
The funeral ceremony for Clyde Meeker will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 14, 2015, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis with Pastor Earlene Lekwa officiating. Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery, Mediapolis. The family will meet friends at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home from 9:30 to 10:30 AM prior to the funeral.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of the Kingston United Methodist Church, the Mediapolis Fire and Rescue, and the Great River Hospice.

Shirley Rowe, 85, of Burlington, died at 7:24 PM Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born April 16, 1930, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Roy Osmond and Mildred Anna Vogelgesang Law.

Shirley worked for IRC-TRW for 20 years before working for Burlington Medical Center for 14 years.

She was a 1947 graduate of Burlington High School.

She enjoyed college football, Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, soap operas, judge shows, crafts, Bingo, and her stay at the Klein Center.

Survivors include one son, John (Sandy) Rowe of Saint Charles, MO; two daughters, Shelley (Tim) Deam of Mediapolis and Janet Marshall of Burlington; two grandsons, Ben Marshall and Joe Marshall; two great-grandsons, Joseph Marshall and Osmond Marshall; one sister, Janet (James) Payne of Davenport; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh-Thielen Crematory.

Visitation with the family to receive friends will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Saturday, September 12, 2015 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St.

The memorial service for Ms. Rowe will be 10:00 AM Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St., with Reverend Randy Langner officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Great River Klein Center and Des Moines County Humane Society.
