Obituaries Monday September 21st

Charles “Chuck” J. Stout, 55, of Burlington, died at 8:00 AM, Friday, September 18, 2015, at his home in Burlington.

Born July 7, 1960, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Wesley E. and Lyla Jean McKeown Stout. Chuck married Wendy Dowell and they later divorced; he married Angie Wilkerson they later divorced; he married Shelly Hines and they later divorced.

Chuck owned Stout Plumbing and operated the Lincolnville 66 Service Station & Towing for several years with his father.

He enjoyed his T-bucket roadster, Harley motorcycle, his animals and his many friends. Chuck was a hard worker, a handy man of many talents.

Survivors include his parents Wesley E. & Lyla Jean McKeown Stout of Burlington, IA; one daughter, Samantha (Joseph Wright) Dohman of Burlington, IA; two sons, Jerry Stout of Iowa City, IA, and Tanner Stout of Burlington, IA; one grandson, Axton Dohman; one granddaughter, Meika Wright.

Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh-Thielen Crematory. A graveside ash committal service will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 11:00 AM in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Chaplain Randy Gearhart will officiate. Those attending the service will meet at Sunnyside Gate prior to the service for a procession to the gravesite.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Richard Harlan Hillgartner, 83, of West Burlington, died at 11:20 PM Friday, September 18, 2015, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington following a courageous five year battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born August 29, 1932, in Burlington, IA, he was the son of Harlan F. and Mildred K. Burton Hillgartner. He married Patricia Jean Grossman, on December 28, 1952 at the Sharon Presbyterian Church in rural Lee County.

Richard was employed at Ewinger Supply Company as an outside salesman, retiring in 1998 after 38 years. He also operated a water conditioning business from his home for many years.

He graduated from Farmington High School 1951 and Burlington Junior College. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran, serving in Texas, Germany and Europe from 1952 to 1956.

In 1941 Richard and his family moved from their farm in the Ordnance Plant area to a farm near Hillsboro, Iowa. He attended rural schools in the county. He was of Methodist faith. Richard liked reading westerns, sudoku puzzles and spending time at his cabin on the Mississippi. He was a St. Louis Cardinal fan and an Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed home improvement projects and working in his garden.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Jean Hillgartner of West Burlington, IA; one daughter, Julie (Robin) Birlson of Burlington, IA; two sons, Allen (Sue) Hillgartner of Grinnell, IA and David Hillgartner of Irving, TX; one granddaughter, Alana Hillgartner of Des Moines, IA; one grandson, Ian Richard Hillgartner of Denver, CO; one sister, Carol Hillgartner of West Burlington, IA; one niece; two nephews; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The memorial service for Mr. Hillgartner will be Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 2:00 PM. at the Prugh~Thielen Funerl Home, 3940 Division Street, with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, West Burlington. Memorials have been established for Greenwood Cemetery and Great River Hospice House. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division Street. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Robert “Bob” Riepe, age 57 of Mediapolis, died Saturday September 19, 2015 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. The son of Merlin and Roberta (Cavin) Riepe, he was born July 22, 1958 at Burlington. On September 30, 2000 he married Sharon Black in Mediapolis. Bob served in the US Army for two years. He retired in 2013 from the US Postal Service as postal clerk. He was affiliated with the Mediapolis Methodist Church. He was a member of the VFW and a member of the Postal Union. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Notre Dame Football and Burlington Bees.
Survivors include: his wife Sharon of Mediapolis; two sisters, Cindy Henry of Burlington; Mindy and Brian Cumpton of Ankeny; nieces and nephews; his two dogs, Landry and Lilly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

According to his wishes cremation has been accorded and there will be a private burial of his cremains at the Kossuth Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis where the family will meet with friends.
