Performance-Enhancing Drug Found in 12 Dubuque Track Dogs

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A performance-enhancing drug has been found in a dozen greyhounds that compete at a track in Dubuque.

Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission Administrator Brian Ohorilko says 12 of the dogs at Iowa Greyhound Park tested positive for ractopamine. He says testing on the dry food given to the greyhounds indicated some ractopamine contamination, leading investigators to believe that’s how the drug was introduced to the dogs.

Ohorilko says nine of the greyhounds are from a kennel owned by Stidham Racing LLC and the other three are from Robert Hardison Kennel. The Telegraph Herald (http://bit.ly/1LLix85 ) reports that both kennels are owned by Iowa Greyhound Association officials and currently aren’t being allowed to enter dogs into races at Iowa Greyhound Park.

Neither kennel returned calls seeking comment from the newspaper.
