Tensions Rise as US Pentagon Talks with Russian Military to Avoid Friendly Fire in Syria

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says it’s beginning talks with the Russian military on ways to avoid U.S. and Russian forces firing on each other in Syria. The talks — being held by video teleconference — come a day after Russian fighter jets began bombing in western Syria and with U.S.-Russian tensions growing.

There’s more evidence that Russia’s targets in Syria don’t just include the Islamic State group. Activists report that Russian jets are suspected of targeting a strategic city in a province of northwestern Syria controlled by rebels. The city fell in April to a coalition of rebel groups that includes al-Qaida’s affiliate in Syria. Activists reported an earlier attack in the province today against a U.S.-backed rebel group.
