Northwest Iowa Egg Farm Illegal Dumping Kills 160,000 Fish

SPENCER, Iowa (AP) — State environmental officials say an egg farm in northwest Iowa dumped egg washing liquid onto a cornfield and it flowed into a creek killing 160,000 fish over 18 miles.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said Friday it considering appropriate enforcement actions against Sunrise Farms south of Harris.

The DNR says high levels of ammonia were found in Stony Creek after a local resident reported dead fish on Monday. The dead fish are valued at about $25,000.

Sunrise Farms is preparing to restock after the bird flu destroyed its 3.8 million hens.

A DNR spokesman said the egg wash was in tanks left over from before the bird flu outbreak and contained a disinfectant so it couldn’t carry virus.

A company spokesman did not immediately respond to a message.
