Man Who Committed Suicide During Traffic Stop Identified

Louisa County Officials have released the name of the man who apparently committed suicide during a traffic stop in Louisa County on Wednesday.

Sheriff’s department officials first responded at around 6:41 pm on Wednesday to a call from a Wapello man who advised that he was approached by a man, now identified as 66 year old Stephen L Ueltschy of Fort Dodge, with a gun in the 900 block of State Street in Wapello. He says Ueltschy threatened him, fired a gun into the air, and then left.

Ueltschy’s vehicle was located by Sheriff’s deputies and Columbus Junction Police Officers at the intersection of Buchanan Street and North Pine just minutes later, at 6:50. As officers pulled over the vehicle and approached the suspect, Ueltschy pulled out a gun, which he turned on himself.
