Texas Senator, Republican Presidential Candidate Ted Cruz Draws Large Crowd in Burlington

Presidential candidate and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) was at the Port of Burlington on Tuesday for a Town Hall where he spoke to a crowd about what he would do the first day in office as president.

Cruz said that on the first day of his presidency he would rescind what he called every “illegal and unconstitutional action” taken by President Obama, instruct the Department of Justice to open, investigate and prosecute Planned Parenthood for criminal violations, put an end to what he called persecution of religious liberty, cancel the Iran deal and move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Cruz’s wife Heidi introduced her husband as an “articulate man who is full of courage”. Upon this introduction Cruz wasted no time in expressing his disdain for recently resigned Speaker of the House, John Boehner and said that he would like to see radio talk show host Mark Levin as the next speaker of the house. Levin who says he does not want to be the next speaker of the house, worked for the Reagan administration. Cruz compared his presidential ambitions to that of Reagan’s successes throughout his speech.

Cruz said that he was proud that he didn’t have a lot of allies in Washington because he considers Washington to be corrupt.

“If you think Washington is fundamentally broken, if you think that there is a bipartisan corruption of career politicians in both parties…we need to take power back from Washington and into the hands of we the people, and that’s what this campaign is about,” said Cruz.

While passionate about his conservative views and dedication to upholding the constitution, Cruz also showed his sense of humor by making several tongue and cheek comments at the expense of President Obama.

He also outlined his agenda for an eight year presidency that includes restructuring the education system by eliminating “Common Core” curriculum policy and rebuilding the military which includes taking care of veterans. Cruz also wants to secure the boarders and end Sanctuary Cities, and while other presidential candidates have expressed similar views, Cruz wants to take it on step further and end Federal Administrations such as the EPA and the IRS.

“The alphabet soup of Federal Agencies swarm like locusts over small business and farms and kill jobs,” Cruz said.

In Abolishing the IRS, Cruz would want to then move from a complicated tax code to a simple flat tax that treats all taxpayers as equals. Cruz’s flat tax would allow for some exemptions and deductions.

Cruz is neck and neck with Jeb Bush in the Real Clear Politics poll average, scoring 7% of voters. He does better in Iowa, scoring 8.3% to put him in fourth place behind Carly Fiorina.
