Man Given Probation After Carrying a Gun on School Grounds

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — A 41-year-old man who carried a rifle onto school grounds in Charles City has been given probation and has been barred from possessing firearms.

Mason City television station KIMT reports (http://bit.ly/1ZFojlv ) that Joshua Johnson, of Charles City, was sentenced on Tuesday in Floyd County District Court. In addition to two years of probation, Johnson was given a year in jail suspended and credited with 30 days already served.

Police say an officer found Johnson outside the middle school, toting a rifle, around 7:40 p.m. on Jan. 31. Police say no activities were taking place at the school at the time.
