Des Moines Police Chief Says Officer Justified in Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert says a police officer who fatally shot a 28-year-old man after a low-speed car chase was justified in her actions.

Wingert told the Des Moines Register (http://dmreg.co/1GfGgku ) that officer Vanessa Miller’s actions when she fatally shot Ryan Bolinger were “consistent with what a reasonable person would do in that situation.” According to Wingert, there was no policy violation.

Attorney Brett Beattie said the Bolinger family isn’t surprised by the results of the police department’s internal investigation.

Police say Miller shot Bolinger once in the torso from inside her patrol car following a car chase on June 9. Miller was assisting another officer in responding to the chase and Bolinger was accused of displaying “erratic behavior,” and advancing toward Miller’s car.

A grand jury decided in August to not indict Miller in the shooting.
