Obituaries Friday October 23rd

Mary Kathleen Weigert, 83, of West Burlington, died at 12:40 AM Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born January 6, 1932, in Dallas City, IL, she was the daughter of Newel and Emma Schulze. In 1983 she married Wilbur Darrell Weigert in Burlington. He died on April 23, 2013.

After graduating high school Mary was employed by the Burlington Hospital for several years. She later worked for Federal Mogul for 30 years, retiring in 1990.

Mary attended the primary and secondary school system in Dallas City.

She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in West Burlington. She loved to grow flowers and maintained an impressive garden in her yard. Mary and Wilbur enjoyed Blue Grass music and attended multiple Blue Grass Festivals every year. Mary was also an avid photographer taking photos at all family events, as well as photos of her many travels.

Survivors include two step-daughters, Vicki (Keith) Stone of Little Rock, AR and Cathy (David) Collins of Scottsdale, AZ; six step-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her step-son, Randall Weigert and her sister, Alice Ragona.

As per Mary’s request, there will be no funeral or visitation. The Graveside Committal Service for Mrs. Weigert will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at Durham Cemetery where Mary will be laid to rest beside her parents. Pastor Dean Moberg will officiate the service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Great River Hospice House.

Mel F. McGinity, 62, of Burlington, died at 7:13 PM Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at his home.

Born April 6, 1953, in Burlington, he was the son of Melburn F. McGinity and Darlene May Russel.

Mel worked for 16 years at Klein Manufacturing.

Growing up he was a member of the Salvation Army Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, socializing, riding Harley Davison motorcycles, spending time with his grandkids, attending their sporting events and assistant coaching.

Survivors include two sons, Luke (Shauna) McGinity of Burlington and Brandon McGinity of Minneapolis, MN; one daughter, Stacy McGinity of Peoria, IL; three brothers, Gary McGinity of West Point, Danny Lee (Lisa) McGinity of Burlington, and Steven L McGinity of Danville; one sister, June (David) Leibli of Winfield; two step-sons, Ryan (Catherine) Boughton of Monroe, WI and Randy (Elizabeth) Boughton of Washington State; several grandchildren; one great-grandson, Logan Miller; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Gloria McGinity.

Cremation has been entrusted to Prugh-Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, October 23, 2015 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.

Ruth Cooper Johnson, 97, of Burlington, died at 9:07 AM Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at the her home.

Born November 18, 1917, in Aledo, IL, she was the daughter of Clarence Robb and Bessie Cabeen Cooper. On April 20, 1941, she married Charles “Chilie” William Johnson in Burlington. He died April 6, 1982.

Ruth worked briefly for Burlington Hospital. She also worked for Dr. Ober as an obstetrics nurse, and later worked as a private duty nurse for over 25 years.

After graduating high school in Aledo, she graduated in 1939 from Burlington Hospital School of Nursing as a register nurse.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, Des Moines County Historical Society, Jane Delano, King’s Daughters, and volunteered at the Phelps House. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, cooking, baking, knitting, crocheting, and babysitting her grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda K. Miller and Sherry B. Daniels, both of Burlington; two grandchildren, Cooper (Kathleen) Miller and Lauren Miller; and one niece, Nancy McDowell of Hannibal, MO; and one nephew, Roland Arthur Cooper of Colorado Springs, CO.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Arthur Cooper and Howard Cooper, and one son-in-law, Richard “Dick” Miller.

As per Ruth’s request cremation has been accorded.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM, where the family will receive friends, Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St.

The memorial service for Mrs. Johnson will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home following the service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
