DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Federal agricultural officials say most commercial chicken and turkey farms that were infected by the bird flu have been cleared to restock.
U.S. Department of Agriculture veterinarian Kevin Petersburg says all but five of the commercial operations on which chickens or turkeys were euthanized or died from the virus have been disinfected, tested negative for the virus and can restock.
Petersburg says samples have been tested from 19,000 wild birds across the nation so far, with plans to test 38,000 total.
Bird flu first surfaced in December on the West Coast and spread over six months to 15 states, resulting in the death of 48 million birds.
