Union Employees, Board of Supervisors Trade Contract Proposals

Union employees with Des Moines County are in talks with the Board of Supervisors over pay and benefits as they come to the end of their contract.

Last week, AFSCME representative Kenton Cole presented initial proposals for three year contracts for both the Health Department and the Road department to the Board, which included a 5% wage increase per year.

During a Tuesday board meeting, the Board counter-proposed a 1% across-the-board wage increase per year as well as added an increasing employee contribution towards healthcare, starting at 3% in 2016 and climbing to 6% and
9% in the two years afterwards. It also includes a provision opening up the contract to renegotiation if the county becomes subject to any fees imposed by the Affordable Care Act.

Representatives from the Communications Workers of American and the Sheriff’s department also submitted proposals on Tuesday. They also requested a 5% annual pay increase.
