270 to Speak at Pipeline Hearing in Boone

BOONE, Iowa (AP) — More than 270 people are set to speak at a public hearing in central Iowa that will focus on a proposed oil pipeline across the state.

The Iowa Utilities Board is scheduled Thursday to listen to several hours of testimony in Boone from people who will share whether they approve of the project or oppose it. People who are neutral on the subject are also slated to speak.

The three-member utilities board is overseeing an application by Dakota Access LLC to build a roughly 1,100-mile pipeline from North Dakota through parts of South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois. Dakota Access is a unit of Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners.

Critics say the project will have a negative environmental impact. Dakota Access says the project would create thousands of temporary jobs.
