Name of Victim in Saturday’s House Fire Released

The person that was killed in a house fire at 115 Acres Street in Burlington on November 14th, has been identified.

Marla K. Moyers, age 55, called the Burlington Fire Department at 10:49 p.m. on Saturday to report a house fire and that she was trapped inside and that she would not be able to escape on her own.

Two Burlington Police Officers arrived at the scene at 10:52 PM. The police officers attempted to gain entry to the house, but were forced back due to the intense heat and smoke.

Firefighters arrived at 10:54 PM to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the front windows of the house. Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the flames and begin a search and rescue attempt. Inside the house, firefighters found the body of Moyers. She was the only occupant of the house at the time of the fire.

An autopsy revealed that Moyers died of asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning and her death is considered accidental.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control at 11:23 p.m.

The house is owned and occupied by Kenneth and Marla Moyers and one child. The small 2-story wood frame house suffered extensive fire and smoke damage and is considered a total loss. Damage estimates include $45,000 to the structure and $50,000 to contents. The house is insured.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing, but is not considered suspicious. The
investigation is being conducted by the Burlington Police and Fire Departments and the Iowa
State Fire Marshal’s office.

10 Burlington firefighters responded to the call and were assisted by 4 West Burlington
firefighters responding on automatic aid.

Superior Ambulance also responded, but diverted to handle a different ambulance call. 5 off duty Burlington firefighters were called in to help.

Firefighters remained on the scene until 07:00 AM Sunday morning. There were no other reports of injury.
