High School Student May Be Charged as an Adult for Jokingly Making Terrorist Threat

SELMA, Ala. (AP) — Police say an 18-year-old student is accused of making a terrorist threat after he told security guards he had a bomb and a gun in his backpack while entering a Selma school.

Selma police Sgt. Evelyn Ghant tells The Selma Times-Journal that the 18-year-old was charged with making a terrorist threat.

Ghant says the student’s book bag set off the metal detectors at the school’s entrance Monday. Ghant says that as the student was walking away from security guards, he said he had a gun and a bomb in his book bag.

Ghant says that the student might have made the comment as a joke but that authorities must take it seriously.

Ghant says whether the student is charged as an adult will be up to a judge.
