Bernie Sanders Meets With Burlington Supporters

Democratic Presidential Candidate and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders stopped by his Burlington Campaign Office on Wednesday to chat with supporters ahead of stops in Keokuk and Ottumwa.

About 70 people gathered in the campaign office on Mount Pleasant Street to hear the Senator, who spoke on wealth inequality.

“We are the wealthiest country in the history of the world, but most people don’t know that, because all of the new wealth and income is going to the top 1%,” Sanders told supporters. “We have a very, very radical idea, and that is to create an economy that works for working people, not just billionaires.”

Sanders also touched on his proposals to increase the minimum wage, expand medicare to include all Americans and implement environmental protections. He’s also proposing eliminating tuition at Public Colleges and Universities.

“We do not need bright young people to come out of schools deeply in debt.” Sanders said, “We should make Public Colleges and Universities tuition free, and we’re going to pay for that with a tax on Wall Street Speculation.”

Sanders, at 74 years old, is the oldest Candidate in the Presidential Race, but his supporters and volunteers include a large group of young people, even some who aren’t even old enough to vote for him, like 16 year old high school sophomore Kamryn Ell.

“His views overall are just really admirable…we got invited today and even thought I can’t participate, I’m still supporting and [volunteering] for his campaign,” Ell told KBUR.

Sanders is currently second in Iowa, according to the Huffington Post Poll Average at 36.6% of the vote, behind former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and ahead of former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley.
