Obituaries Monday November 7th

Carl Edward Mumme, 93, of Danville, died Friday, November 4, 2016 at the Great River Klein Center, West Burlington.

The funeral service for Carl E. Mumme will be held Thursday, November 10th at 10:30 AM at Elliott Chapel, New London.  Reverend David Mixon will officiate. Interment will be held at Long Creek Cemetery, rural Danville, with military rites by The Henry County Honor Guard.  Visitation will begin after noon on Wednesday, November 9th at the chapel with the family present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00.  There will be an Eastern Star Service at 7:00 PM.

Memorials in honor of Carl Mumme have been established for the Danville Fire Department and an Order Of Eastern Star scholarship.

 

Michael ‘Pete’ Peterson, age 57, of Mediapolis, died Friday, November 4, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  The son of Ralph A. and Lorraine M. Ruschill Peterson, he was born on April 21, 1959 in Burlington.

 

Mike graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1977.  He grew up on the farm and enjoyed farming until he became an electrician and worked at the US Gypsum plant.  Along with farming, he enjoyed fishing, gardening, and being with his family and friends.

 

He is survived by his mother, Lorraine Peterson of Burlington; three sisters, LeAnne & Mike Van Winkle of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Becky & Monte Delzell of Morning Sun, and Lisa & Mark Inman of San Antonio, Texas; eight nieces and nephews, Jon and Matt Van Winkle, Tayler and Jordan Delzell, Allie Peters, and Hunter, Dakotah, and Nikki Inman; and a great nephew, Noah Peters.  He was preceded in death by his father.

 

The family will gather and meet friends prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis with the funeral being held at 10:30 AM, officiated by Paul Rathke, Bereavement Coordinator of Hospice Compassus.  Burial will follow at the Kossuth Cemetery.

 

Memorials will benefit the Mediapolis Community Ambulance Service and the Mediapolis FFA.

Bernard R. ‘Buck’ Gittings, age 64, of Wapello, died Friday afternoon, November 4, 2016, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City.  The son of Bill and Charlotte Beckman Gittings, he was born on April 5, 1952, in Mt. Pleasant.  He married Karen Copeland on August 24, 1990, in Burlington.

 

He graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1970 and served in the US Navy for 7 years during the Vietnam Conflict.  Buck enjoyed being owner – operator of his own semi trucking business.  He also enjoyed camping, fishing, and mechanics.

 

His family includes his wife, Karen; four children, Billy Gittings of Lakeland, Florida, Trisha Jackson of West Burlington, Aaron & Amber Gittings of Peoria, Illinois, and Kelsey Gittings & Mitch Meyers of Lincoln, Nebraska; three step-children, Tammy & Scott Noble and Jodi & Duane Boysen both of Morning Sun and Lance & Cher Talbott of Wapello; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; a brother, Ron & Mary Gittings of Esko, Minnesota; a sister, Cathy & Bob Cowles of Morning Sun; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

His request following cremation is for a Celebration of Life to be held at Lake Odessa – Snively Access from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturday, November 12, 2016.

Dorothy Evon Wasson, 87, of Burlington, died Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 2:10 PM at the Burlington Care Center.

 

Born August 15, 1928, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of Floyd Everett and Lena Ellen Courtney Ashby. On January 15, 1945, she married Clarence E. Wasson in Burlington. He died August 13, 1995.

 

Dorothy worked as an Licensed Practical Nurse at various care facilities.

 

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was an avid NASCAR fan.

 

Survivors include one son, John (Joyce) Wasson of Waukee, IA; four daughters, Linda Wasson of Des Moines, IA, Nancy Hoyt of Mocksville, NC, Cheryl (John) Kurz of Waukegan, IL, and Barbara (Charlie) Bell of Arlington, TX; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

 

As per Dorothy’s request, cremation has been accorded and there will be no formal services at this time.

 

Inurnment will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

 

A memorial has been established for Trinity Lutheran Church.

Robert Lawrence Thele, 71, of Burlington, died at 2:16 PM Friday, November 4, 2016, at home.

 

Born June 18, 1945, in Bethesda, MD, he was the son of Lawrence W. and Agnes Margaret Widerspach Thele.

 

Robert received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1972.

 

Robert was a math professor at Oklahoma and Nebraska University.

 

He was of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed reading, particularly history, and staying up-to-date on current events; he also enjoyed shopping in hardware stores.

 

Survivors include one brother, James R. Thele of Omaha, NE; one nephew, Paul (Michaelle) Thele of Gretna, NE; and one great-niece, Maiya Thele of Gretna, NE,.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM with the family to receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The funeral service for Mr. Thele will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Very Reverend Father Marty Goetz as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery following the service.

 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
