Obituaries Tuesday December 27th

Harold Joseph Weber, 83, of Mediapolis died on Saturday, December 24th. Harold was born in Quincy, IL on January 23rd, 1933. He was the son of Harold and Irene Balzer Weber. Harold married Eva Lundeen in Galesburg, IL in 1952.

 

Harold was a 1951 graduate of Quincy Notre Dame High School. He served in the army in Germany during 1953-54. Harold was a longtime bookkeeper. He was also a 50 year plus member of the Winfield VFW and American Legion. Harold attended the Mediapolis First United Methodist Church.

 

Harold loved to play golf, cards and attending dog and horse races. His lifelong dream was fulfilled when the Chicago Cubs won the World Series. He enjoyed all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and attended many of their activities.

 

Survivors include his wife Eva; brother Edward of Florida; sons Daniel (Carla) Weber, Mediapolis and Michael (Lucinda) Weber, Mt. Pleasant; daughter Susan (Rodney) Fisher, Wapello; eight grandchildren: Jason (Leslie) Weber, Medina, WA; Cara (Trey) Hammond, Ocala, FL; Matthew Weber, Chicago, IL; Clayton Weber, Chicago, IL; Brian (Laci) Weber, Silvis, IL; Bethany (Trent) Hepler, Sioux Falls, SD; Ashley (Alex) Bartenhagen, Wapello; Emily Fisher, Wapello and nine great-grandchildren: Danica, Brycen, Lexton, Ziah, Lillian, Kellen, Mara, Jackson and Lyla. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Helen Cartwright.

 

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 at Hagele-Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis on Wednesday, Dec. 28th. The funeral will be held at 10:30 on Thursday, Dec. 29th, at the Mediapolis First United Methodist Church. Interment will be at the Winfield Scott Township Cemetery.

 

Memorials may be given to Great River Hospice House in West Burlington or First United Methodist Church in Mediapolis.

 

Mr. Paul Yetter Anderson, 78, of LaHarpe, IL passed away at 5:15 PM Sunday, December 25, 2016 at his home.

He was born March 14, 1938 near Fountain Green, IL, the son of Paul H. and Naomi Yetter Anderson. On January 1, 1971 he married Beverly Butterfield Clover in Lomax, IL.

Paul was a 1956 graduate of LaHarpe High School and served in the US Navy from 1956 – 1960. He lived in California for 9 years, returning to LaHarpe in 1969. He drove semis for Bobby Jones and Wayne Bell and worked for Fred Gibb Chevrolet before starting his own business, Paul’s Muffler Shop, in 1974. He retired in 2010. Paul went to California in 1971 with Jim Hayter where the Fred Gibb Camaro won the World Series of Drag Racing. He was also involved with truck pulling in the 1970’s with Michael Butler.

Surviving are his wife, 2 children, Cindy (Todd) Irish and Dave Clover all of LaHarpe, 3 granddaughters, Jen (Jason) DeVito-Floyd of Bloomington, IL, Lisa Irish of LaHarpe and Tesla French of LaHarpe, IL.

Paul was preceded in death by his father, Paul H. Anderson his step-father, Lee Lewis and his mother, Naomi Anderson Lewis.

No services are planned. A private family burial will be held at a later date at LaHarpe Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the LaHarpe Union Church, the LaHarpe Ambulance Service or the MDH Hospice. Robert “Bob” Jordan Work, 72, of Mediapolis, died at 1:18 PM Saturday, December 24, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House.

 

Born January 30, 1944, in Ottumwa, IA, he was the son of Jordan Marlow and Velma Rose Work. On September 21, 1984, he married Joan Louise Parisi in Burlington, IA.

 

Bob worked at J.I. Case for thirty-one years before he retired in 1996.

 

He attended Ottumwa High School.

 

He was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington.  He enjoyed fishing, camping, and St. Louis Cardinals baseball.

 

Survivors include his wife; two step-sons, Robert (Linda) Hill, Daniel (Jayne) Hill both of Burlington; two step-daughters, Jane (Matt) Schuler of New London, Christine (John) Marland of El Cajon, CA; 14 grandchildren, Mollie, Kahlen, Jordan, Spencer, Jaclyn, Hannah, Jared, Stephanie, Jonathan, Danielle, Jaime, Justin, Julianna, JohnPaul; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers; and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington.

 

The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Work will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington with Rev. Father Bill Roush as the Celebrant.  Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir.  Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held at SS. Mary & Patrick Parrish Center following the burial.

 

A memorial has been established for SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington.

Marla Ann Buhmeyer, 57, of Danville died at 2:17 p.m. Sunday, December 25, 2016, at her home.

Born April 29, 1959 in Monmouth, Illinois, she was the daughter of Michael Hall and Marsha (Cunningham) Pfadenhauer.

Ms. Buhmeyer was a 1977 Roseville, Illinois High School and a Patricia Stevens Academy graduate.  She was a receptionist for Modern Welding the past four years and had worked at several construction firms previously.  She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Ms. Buhmeyer enjoyed babysitting dogs, gardening, working with flowers and spending time with her family.

Survivors include one son, Matt (Libby Ross) Buhmeyer of Fort Madison; her mother and stepfather, Marsha (Lloyd) Pfadenhauer of West Burlington; her father, Michael Hall of Roseville, Illinois; three brothers, Michael (Siemonne) Hall II of Macomb, Illinois, Mark S. Hall of West Burlington, and Mitchell (Laura) Hall of Ft. Pierce, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 28th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m.

The funeral service for Ms. Buhmeyer will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 29th, at Lunning Chapel with the Rev. Kathleen Wolhers officiating.

A memorial has been established.

Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel and will be accorded following the funeral service.

 

Genevie Hartman, 85, of Fairfield, formerly of West Burlington, died 12:30 a.m. Monday, December 26, 2016 at Parkview Care Center, Fairfield.

Born August 19, 1931 in Livonia, Missouri, she was the daughter of Willard A. and Helen (Hinerman) Napple.  In 1955, she married Walter William Regnier Sr. in Alliance, Nebraska.  They later divorced.   On September 7, 1973 she married Gerald Hartman in Albia, IA.  He died October 27, 2007.

Mrs. Hartman worked in administration for Universal for 38 years, she retired in 1990.

Survivors include her grandson; Will Regnier of Fairfield; daughter-in-law, Desiree Regnier of Fairfield; step sons, Ronald “Ron”, Robert “Bob” and Larry of Kansas; step daughter, Carol of Kansas and numerous step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry; one son, Bill Regnier Jr.; and one sister, Eileen Thorner.

There will be no formal funeral service for Mrs. Hartman.  According to her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.

 

James Arnold Chubb, 81, of Burlington, Iowa, lost his battle with cancer­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ December 22, 2016. Born June 21, 1935, in Burlington, Jim was the son of Jacob and Hilma Chubb.  He married Jacquelyn Handrich in 1955. They later divorced. He married DiAnne Brosseau Lerud in 1990.

Mr. Chubb graduated Burlington High School, 1953, attended Burlington Junior College, 1957, graduated Iowa Wesleyan College, 1964, and Northeast Missouri State University, 1965, with a Masters of Arts in Guidance and Counseling.

A Korean era veteran, Mr. Chubb enlisted June 30, 1953, and served as a paratrooper in the US Army, Company B, 505th, 82nd Airborne. He made 24 jumps and during the jumps he recited the 23rd Psalm.  He was an expert pistol shot and instructor on the 82nd Airborne team. From 1975-77, he was a recruiter with the 224th National Guard unit in Mount Pleasant and in 1975 received an Excellence in Recruiting award.

Mr. Chubb, a Cold War Patriot, worked as an inspector for three and a half years on Line 1 at IAAP.  Jim never met a person he didn’t like, and this served him well as a guidance counselor at New London High School for 31 years.  He coached the golf team many years and saw his golfers and team advance to State.  After retirement, Jim served one year as guidance counselor at Union and at Yorkwood, Illinois High Schools and fourteen years administering the ASVAB test to potential military recruits at the Middletown Reserve Center and National Guard Armory in Burlington.

Jim belonged to Crystal Lake and Carthage Lake Clubs and served on their Boards of Directors; taught Iowa Hunter Safety for twenty-five years and helped with the New London Community School sixth grade campout and for this service he received a Volunteer Award from the Governor of Iowa; was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Kaaba Shrine Club; belonged to the Moose and Elks Lodges, American Legion, Ducks Unlimited, and Keenagers; and was a life member of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 505th Panther Associates.

Mr. Chubb volunteered with Burlington Steamboat Days, SnowBull, and dragonboat races, and donated thirteen gallons of blood to the area blood bank.

He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and was overjoyed to see them win the World Series.  He cheered for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Bears and Cubs. Of course, Jim was an ardent Grayhound and Iowa Hawkeye fan. A lifelong hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed spending time at Crystal Lake and Carthage Lake Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Anita, and sister-in-law Bess Chubb.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Jim is survived by his wife; one daughter Julie Chubb and one son Jerry Chubb of Burlington; stepchildren DeAnna Lerud (Brandon Holmes) and Donald Lerud of Burlington; five step grandchildren (Nathan, Nick, Colton, Keira, and Keigan); one brother David Chubb (Mary Lou Kitterman); nieces Jan Chubb Parris and Valerie Bohlen (Steve); nephew Ken Chubb (Pat); lifelong friend Bobby D. Johnson; and faithful guard dog and companion Poochie.

Jim enjoyed visiting with family, friends and classmates these last months, and he appreciated the doctors, nurses and caregivers who came to the house and made it possible for him to remain at home.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 27th, at Lunning Chapel followed by Masonic Rites at 7 p.m.

The funeral service for Mr. Chubb will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 28th, at Zion United Church of Christ with the Rev. Brice Hughes officiating.  The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.  Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.  There will be a luncheon and celebration of life following the committal service at 12:30 p.m. at the Carthage Lake Club.

Joan Smith, age 88, of Mediapolis, Iowa, passed peacefully to the next life on December 20, 2016, at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.  She was the daughter of Fred and Harriet (Atwood) Hill and grew up in Southcentral Iowa.  As a young woman, she taught in one room schools in the Sigourney area and attended summer school at Iowa Teachers College (UNI).  She settled with her family in the Mediapolis area in 1963, completed her B.A. degree at Iowa Wesleyan College, and taught in elementary classrooms at Huron, Sperry, and Mediapolis.  After retirement, she continued to be active in the Mediapolis community.  She was an active member of the O.E.S. and the Kingston United Methodist Church, where she served as church organist for 52 years, until just two weeks before her death.  She also shared her love of music by giving piano lessons, playing for weddings and funerals, and making weekly visits to the Care Centers in Mediapolis and Morning Sun to entertain the residents.  She wrote “The Southeast Corner” column for the Mediapolis New Era and Mediapolis News for over 30 years and was a treasured member of the staff.  Joan was a lover of life, with a thirst for adventure that took her in later years to Alaska, Scotland, Ireland, and many places in the U.S.  In July, she had the thrill of flying in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon.  She loved bagpipe music, her books, her garden, her family and friends, and her God, and she lived every day with unfailing kindness as a testament to her faith.

 

Joan leaves behind her sister Carol Hill Willett of Hamilton, Missouri; brother Lowell Hill of Urbana, Illinois; daughter Kathie Yoder and her husband Robert Redlinger of Anchorage, Alaska; their children Elizabeth Barnes, Matthew Redlinger, Rachel and Peter House, Jenna and Dillon Baldiviez, and Michael and Elisabeth Redlinger, all of Anchorage; and daughter-in-law Kathy A. Yoder and grandson Ethan Yoder of Sioux City.  She has five great-grandchildren, Michael and Paul Barnes, and Josephine, Adeline and Eleanor House.  She also leaves many nieces and nephews and devoted friends.  Joan was preceded in death by husbands Raymond Yoder and Stanley Smith, by brothers Paul, Richard and Francis Hill, and by sons Donald and David Yoder.

 

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on December 27, 2016, at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis.  A Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at the Kingston United Methodist Church.  Pastor Earlene Lekwa will officiate, with music provided by Karen Loper, Carol Willett, and Ethan Yoder.  A luncheon will be served by the UMW beginning at 11:30, with memorial service at 1:00 PM.  Interment will follow at Kossuth Cemetery in Mediapolis.  The family requests donations to the Mediapolis Public Library in lieu of flowers.  Although Joan loved flowers, she loved books more.  She would be honored for the library to be able to expand services in her memory.

Eric Matthew Cromer, age 41, of Grandview, died Thursday, December 22, 2016, at Trinity in Muscatine.  The son of Raymond and Cherry Peterson Cromer, he was born on April 30, 1975 in Muscatine.

 

Eric graduated from L & M High School in 1994.  He served in the Iowa National Guard from 1992 to 2002 with Co A 224th Engineer Battalion.  He has worked in management at HON Industries in Muscatine.  Eric enjoyed outdoor activities including boating, fishing, and working in the yard.  He also enjoyed NASCAR.

 

His family includes his parents, Raymond and Cherry Cromer of Grandview; children, Brodie Cromer of Polo, Illinois, Samantha Cromer of Beardstown, Illinois, Searra, Austin, and Shelbie Hos

ford and Brandon Stone both at home; his brother, Jamie & Shelly Cromer of Wapello; and his companion, Shawn Stone.  He was preceded in death by his nephew, Cody Cromer; two uncles; and three aunts.

 

The family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.  The funeral ceremony for Eric Cromer will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at the Grandview Community Bible Church with Pastor Rich Kolmus and Rev. Darryl Erickson officiating.  Military Rites will be conducted following the service also followed by a fellowship lunch at the church.

 

Cremation will follow the funeral and burial will be at a later date in the Grandview Cemetery.

 

Memorial contributions will benefit his family.
