Obituaries Tuesday March 28th

Donovan Clair “Don” Acord, 83, of Burlington, died at 1:47 PM Friday, March 24, 2017, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

 

Born July 29, 1933, in Barnes City, he was the son of Wilbur Willard Acord and Margaret Marie Molyneus. He was raised by his mom and step-dad, Margaret and Harry Reuschenburg. On December 31, 1951, he married Marilyn Blessing. They later divorced.

 

When Don moved to Burlington, he worked for several businesses, Sears & Roebuk in receiving, Buhmeyer Auto Sales, and Strahn Bakery. He drove a bread truck, worked for 7-Up Bottling Company, R & S Bottling Co delivering out of town and in the Burlington area for 26 years. He then started his own Matco tool business he later sold and went to work for Montgomery Wards until they closed. He then retired.

 

He loved to socialize with people, drink coffee, gamble, attend auctions, watching old western movies, visit friends in Canada and California and visit his brother in Kansas. Don was known as the Pepsi man; he enjoyed playing Bingo, Card Shark and being outside. He played Santa for other families during the holidays. He was always very active his entire life until his stroke in 2011. He enjoyed joking with others and driving his wheel chair backwards.

 

Survivors include three sons, David (Barbara) Acord of Mediapolis, Rick (Pam) Acord of Olathe, KS, and Marc (Mary) Acord of Overland Park; three daughters, Sharon (Jerry) Neff of Burlington, Nancy Steveson of Marshalltown, and Diane (Blake) Scott of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and one more on the way; and one brother, Duane Acord of Shawnee, KS.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Harry Reuschenburg; one brother; one grandson, Travis Neff; and one son-in-law, Orville Steveson.

 

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

 

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Wednesday, March 29, 2017 where the family to receive friends at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

 

The Graveside Committal Service for Mr. Acord will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Aspen Grove Cemetery with Reverend Ryan Cosgrove officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church following the burial.

 

Memorials have been established for the Special Needs Foundation and Boy Scout Troop 15 (Hope Haven).

Barry A. Geng, 79, of Burlington, died at 3:08 AM Saturday, March 25, 2017, peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.

 

Born April 23, 1937, in Burlington, he was the son of Reuben Francis and Margaret Winters Geng. On June 27, 1964, he married Sue Whitford in Omaha, NE.

 

He was of the Catholic faith.

 

He served in the United States Army serving at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. He attended Drake University and became a pharmacist. He returned to Burlington and opened Apothecary 24 with William Monroe in 1964. He became sole owner and operated it until his retirement in January 2001.

 

Barry loved life and all of the things he was able to do. Traveling the world, playing bridge, sailing, and golfing were some of his favorite activities. He was a pilot and drove race cars competing in SCCA and was division champion one year. He was a member of Old Fort Yacht, Knights of Columbus serving as a Black Knight and was one of the founding members of the Motley Crew Investment Club.

 

Survivors include his wife, Sue; his four children; Rebecca (Ross) Dowell of Lincoln, IL, Deborah (Gary) Brueck of Burlington, Steve (Diana) Geng of Myrtle Beach, SC and Kimberly (Jon) Wittkamp of Burlington. He loved his grandchildren, Jillian, Jordan, Blake, Logan, Hannah, Barrett, Zander, Danni, and Jacqueline and great-grandson, Ryker; one brother, Jim (Sarah) Geng of Largo, FL. He had several nieces and nephews. Barry and Sue also had several foster children.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

To continue his love of learning, Barry deeded his body to the University of Iowa so others can learn.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Reverend Dean Graber officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the Prugh~Thielen community room following the celebration.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Southeast Iowa Symphony and Great River Hospice.

Ms. Janice Maureen Stafford, 69, of West Burlington died at 6:01 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at her home.  Born October 25, 1947 in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Junius Marshall and Eleaner Gertrude (Martin) Clark.

Ms. Stafford was a bartender at North Hill Tap for 15 years, did powder coating at Winegard Company and most recently worked in housekeeping at Fun City, retiring in 2013.

Ms. Stafford was a hard worker and enjoyed playing cards, telling jokes, camping, fishing, and spending time eating with her family.

Survivors include her three daughters that she raised on her own, Melissa Ell, Michelle (Anthony Forthenberry) Stafford and Jennifer (Jason Johnson) Stafford all of Burlington; four grandchildren, Brandon Forthenberry, Matthew Ell, Suzanne Ell, and Madison Johnson; two brothers, Tom (Debbie) Clark of Denver, Colorado and Jim (Anna) Clark of Covington, Georgia; one sister, Judy Miller of Danville, Illinois; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Thursday, March 30th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m.

A memorial has been established.

Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel and will be accorded following the visitation.

 

Mr. Terry L. Harvey, 49, of Burlington was found at his residence Wednesday, March 22, 2017.

Born August 18, 1967 in Corydon, IA, he was the son of Richard S. and Gwenda Kay Henderson Harvey.

Terry was a Direct Support Worker for Hope Haven for six years.

He graduated from West Burlington Arnold High School Class of 1985.

Terry was of the Methodist Faith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and loved his Vikings and Cardinals.

Survivors include his daughter, Tera (Nate) Cooling of North Liberty, IA; one granddaughter, Charlotte; his mother and stepfather, Gwen and Jim Baker of West Burlington; his father, Richard (Donna) Harvey of Olney, IL; his maternal grandmother, Eula Henderson of Corydon; half-sister, Kolby (Sully) Streeby of Ottumwa; and half-brother, Cody (Stephanie) Harvey of Champaign, IL; stepbrother, Jeff (Tammy) Baker of Brookfield, MO; stepsisters, Karen Lorton of Macon, MO and Kim Baker of Brookfield, MO; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert and Margaret Harvey and his maternal grandfather, Wayne Henderson.

The family will greet friends Saturday, April 8th from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

The memorial service for Mr. Harvey will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 8th, 2017 at Lunning Chapel with Mr. Brad Bork officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date In Corydon Cemetery, Corydon, IA.

A memorial has been established for his granddaughter’s education.

Cremation has been accorded.
