The hot and humid conditions continue throughout the listening area as we head into the weekend, it’s been so hot in fact, that Alliant Energy activated their “Appliance Cycling” program Thursday afternoon.

“What it does, it cycles the main air conditioner on a house on and off every 15 minutes during the hottest part of the day, so we’re able to lower the amount of energy we need to generate, and thus lower the cost for all of our customers in Iowa,” says Justin Foss, an Alliant Energy spokesperson. He tells KBUR that anyone who participates in that program receives an $8.00 credit on their bill throughout the summer months.

Foss says a radio controlled switch is installed free of charge to customers, and during peak times air conditioning units are cycled on and off in 15-minute increments. He says currently around 10,000 people participate in the program in Southern Iowa.

Foss also offered some energy efficiency tips for these hot summer days… he says it’s a myth that keeping your house at a constant temperature is more efficient than letting it warm up when you’re not home. He recommends programming thermostats so it’s warmer when you’re out of the house, he also says it’s a good idea to turn fans off when you are not in a room, as they don’t keep a room cooler, just keep people more comfortable.
