Carroll Shaklee, 70, of Camp Point, formerly of Ft. Madison, died at 3:32 PM Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.

Born June 10, 1947, in Mt. Pleasant, he was the son of Paul H. and Martha M. J. Shepherd Shaklee. On June 2, 1984, he married Martha E. Burkholder in Kalona, IA.

He worked for a sawmill in Denmark, IA as a lumber-worker.

He graduated from High School in Stockport, IA.

He enjoyed watching old movies, particularly those featuring John Wayne, and watching Gun Smoke. He enjoyed game shows, reading his Bible, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, April Shaklee of Keokuk; one sister Paula (John) Nelson and one brother, Lee Shaklee both of Conrad, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, September 22, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Bertie Quam, 84, of Burlington, died at 10:20 AM Thursday, September 14, 2017, at her home in Burlington.

Born June 3,1933, in Winfield, she was the daughter of Elbert and Ruth Breuer Snell. On February 21, 1954, she married Jerry D. Quam in Burlington. He later passed on April 25, 2007.

She was a lifelong nurse and care giver, and held an active nursing license until a year ago. She worked as a surgery nurse for Fort Madison Community Hospital for 17 years. She also worked as a nurse doing in-home health care for Professional Case Management.

She graduated from Winfield High School in 1947. She graduated in 1953 from the Burlington Hospital School of Nursing.

She helped start hospice services in the area and volunteered many hours at Great River Hospice, as well as, serving as Director of Volunteers. In 2004, she received a Volunteer of the Year in Iowa Award for her work. She was an avid bridge player. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family. She also enjoyed singing in the church choir, going to church, volunteering, spending time with family, shopping and drinking wine. She was a member of the Eagle’s Club and Moose Lodge.

Survivors include three sons, Spencer S (Magali) Quam of Lafayette, CA; Steven D Quam of Burlington; and Samuel D (Anna) Quam of Gladstone, IL; six grandchildren, Shane, Savanna (Derek Evans), Courtney, Zara, Joseph, and Margaux; one great-grandchild, Hayzel Evans; one sister, Mary Gilbert of Mission, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two sisters, Norene Maycroft and Kay Joslyn.

Visitation will be from noon until 5:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM , at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Bertie will be 11:00 AM Monday, September 18, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Hermansen officiating. A time of refreshments and fellowship will be held at Big Muddy’s following the service. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Great River Hospice House, her grandchildren, and Bethany Lutheran Church.

Mr. Donald G. Winslow, 81, of Yarmouth died at 1:55 a.m. Friday, September 15, 2017, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born January 20, 1936 in Pekin, Indiana, he was the son of Lawrence B. and Maude E. (Markland) Winslow. He married Diane June Kummerer who preceded him in death on January 21, 1979. On November 3, 1990 he married Louisa Langheinz in Burlington. She also preceded him in death on September 4, 2008.
Mr. Winslow was a graduate of Burlington High School. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his son, Mike Winslow of Yarmouth; two daughters, Sheryl Berge of Cosby, Tennessee and Renee (Rick) Baker of Sperry; two stepdaughters, Maria Langherinz of Philomath, Oregon and Barbara Stamper of Burlington; one stepson, Frank Armstrong of Dallas City, Illinois; 7 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Billie Forristall of Cedar Rapids and Peggy (Len) Grabian of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, one grandchild, his brother Bob, and one stepdaughter.
The funeral for Mr. Winslow will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 20th, at Lunning Chapel. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

Richard “Butch” Goble, 71, of Burlington, died at 3:18 PM Friday, September 15, 2017, at the Genesis Medical Center East, Davenport.

Born February 15, 1946, in Iowa City, he was the son of Arthur J. and Pearl A. Timmerman Goble. On December 10, 1966, he married Deborah Mae Born in Burlington. She died on June 12, 2011.

Butch was a partner in Goble Construction for over 30 years and a carpenter for 46 years.

He was a member of First United Church of Christ, Cascade Boat Club, Big Island Boat Club, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Burlington Aerie 150, Carpenters Union, and the Mans Breakfast Club. He was an avid hunter, and enjoyed boating, fishing, mushroom hunting, sitting out on his porch, spending time with friends, and being outdoors. Most of all, he enjoyed making his rounds, spending time with his sisters, kids and grandkids.

Survivors include his three daughters, Jodi (John) Reusch of Burlington, daughter, Cindy (Stacy) Fox of Danville, daughter, Abby (Jake) Richenberger of Danville, seven grandchildren, Hunter and Taylor Reusch, Drake, Drew, and Ella Fox, Reese and Brady Richenberger; his very special friend, Debbie Harris of Burlington; four sisters, Joan Bowers of Kingston, Joyce Hageman of Burlington, Sue Cleek of Burlington, and Linda (Bill) Pilger of West Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The funeral service for Butch will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at First United Church of Christ with Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Burlington Eagles Club following the service. Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.

Dan Nichols, 52, of Burlington, died at 12:30 AM Sunday, September 17, 2017, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born February 22, 1965, in Burlington, he was the son of James and Mary Nichols. On April 6, 2000, he married Lynn Frances Traman in Burlington. She later passed away on October 8, 2013.

He worked for 29 years as a Heatilator on an assembly line.

He graduated from Ashford University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business.

He loved Batman and enjoyed hiding Batman figurines in various places, was an avid New York Yankees fan, enjoyed playing pool, trivia, and video games. He also enjoyed music, comic books, superheroes, animals and he was always reading a book.

Survivors include his daughter, Sidney Nichols of Altoona; his special friend, Shelly McIlhenny of Burlington; and his former in-laws, Don and Lois Traman of Burlington.

Besides his wife, he preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Thursday, September 21, 2017 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The memorial service for Mr. Nichols will be 10:00 AM Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating.
