The Burlington High School Cross Country team placed third in the Grayhound Invitational meet yesterday. Wapello took first, Clark County, Missouri finished second.

West Burlington, Holy Trinity, Danville, and New London will advance after winning in pool play at the SEI Superconference tournament.

Dexter Fowler delivered again, getting three hits and driving in two runs as the St. Louis Cardinals overcame Scott Schebler’s two home runs to beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-5 for a three-game sweep. Kris Bryant launched a two-run homer in the 10th inning to complete Chicago’s comeback in a 5-3 triumph at Milwaukee.  Jason Vargas and four relievers combined on a two-hitter, Melky Cabrera had three hits and the game’s only RBI, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0. The White Sox were 3-1 winners over the Astros behind Chris Volstad, who worked 4 1/3 innings of one-run relief to pick up his first victory since 2012.
