Obituaries Monday January 22nd

Vivian Pauline (Daniels) Martin, known to her close friends as “Polly”, of Burlington, died 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at her home. She was 94 years young.
Born May 14, 1923 in Dolphin, Virginia she was the daughter of Giles Anthony and Mary Eveline (Gibson) Daniels.
Miss Daniels was a graduate of Lawrenceville High School, in Lawrenceville, Virginia. Her desire to be a nurse sent her to Mary Washington College at the University of Virginia where she attended one year of Pre-Med from 1940-1941.
She graduated in September of 1944 from Union Memorial Hospital’s School of Nursing. An affiliate of John’s Hopkins Hospital for Ophthalmology and Psychiatry in Baltimore, MD. Miss Daniels worked in the Well Baby nursing in the Obstetrics and Pediatrics Department at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore during the war years.
On February 19, 1944, Miss Daniels married Robert H. Martin, a soldier she had met during the war. After the war, the Martin’s moved to Burlington, IA to live with Rosemary, their first of four children.
Mrs. Martin worked for years as a Special Duty Nurse on the Pediatrics Surgical and Medical floor of Mercy Hospital. In addition, she worked on the Psych floors after her retirement from the offices of Dr’s Friday and Foss. Mrs. Martin worked for eight years in the office of Dr. Walter Friday and 12 years in the office of Dr. John Foss, both specialists in the area of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
Mrs. Martin was a member of Divine Mercy Parish – SS Mary & Patrick Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, swimming, and monthly luncheons with her fellow nurses and widows.
Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca P. Bisel of Thornton, CO; two sons, Robert A. “Butch” Martin of Burlington and Randall A. Martin of Los Angeles, CA; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, oldest and third child, Rosemary and Raymond and one sister.
The Memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 24th at Divine Mercy Parish – SS Mary & Patrick Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Father Marty Goetz will be the celebrant. The Des Moines County Resurrection Choir will provide music.
According to Mrs. Martin’s wishes her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program where she will join her husband’s body which was also donated after his death in 2006.
A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Joann Timmerman, 81, of Burlington died 8:05 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born December 18, 1936 in Burlington, she was the daughter of John and Myrtle (Heinz) Ross. She married Royal Timmerman on September 11, 1954 in Burlington and together they celebrated 63 years of marriage.

Joann was an immaculate homemaker. She loved nature and bird watching. She was a Dairy Queen junkie and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, and working with porcelain. She made many afghans and dolls. She was a fantastic wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by her family and her dog “Snooks”.

Survivors include her husband, Royal Timmerman of Burlington; two sons Brian Timmerman of Texarkana, Texas and Bradley Timmerman of Roseville, Illinois; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ross of Iowa City and Barbara Gibbs of Mediapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son Johnathon.

The graveside funeral service and interment for Mrs. Timmerman will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 24th at Aspen Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Dean Graber will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 23rd at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

Ethel Myrtle Whitaker, age 97, a resident of Prairie Ridge Care and Rehab in Mediapolis and a long time resident of Oakville, died Saturday morning, January 20, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. The daughter of Perry and Beulah Potter Hutton, Ethel was born on August 8, 1920 in Clinton, Missouri. She married Charlie Henry Whitaker on July 26, 1936 in Cameron, Missouri where she had grown up as a child. He preceded her in death on December 15, 2002.

She was a homemaker and had worked part time at the Oakville General Store and then as a cook for the Oakville Elementary School. She was a member of the Oakville Community Bible Church where she had taught Sunday School for many years. Ethel enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, and arts and crafts.

Her family includes three children, Perry & Priscilla Whitaker of Phelan, California, Edna Elaine & Omar Tate of Climax Springs, Missouri, and Charlie W. & Mary Whitaker of Urbandale; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; a sister, Sylvia & Dean Amos of Decatur, Arkansas; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charlie; 2 daughters, Esther Pridey and Bessie Whitaker; a grandson, Jonathan; and 2 brothers, Albert and William Hutton.

Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello where the family will meet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

The funeral ceremony for Ethel Whitaker will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, officiated by Pastor Jim Ruberg and Pastor Steve Parker. Burial will follow at the Edwards Cemetery, rural Oakville with a lunch to follow at the Oakville Community Building.

Memorial gifts will benefit the Oakville Community Bible Church.
