Earlier this month a 30 million dollar bond referendum for the Fort Madison School District missed passing by just 18 votes. A recount of the 2,959 ballots cast will take place Monday after a petition with 30 signatures was submitted to the Les County Auditor’s Office.
The recount will be conducted by a Fort Madison School Board Member Carol Ross, SCC Vice Chairwoman Janet Fife-LaFrenz and retired Central Lee Superintendent Marge Wilhelm. Lee County Auditor Denise Fraise was quoted in the Hawkeye as saying she does not expect the recount to uncover any more yes votes, since the voting machines operated properly the day of the vote.
