The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors approved a nearly $750K budget amendment at Tuesday’s meeting.

Public safety comprised $318K of that change for two new patrol vehicles for the Sheriff’s office and increased staffing costs at the jail.

Funds for the county conservation department were also amended, however aren’t expected to affect the general fund, the secondary roads department shifted funds between accounts due to federal mandates, and the IT department added around $27K for server software, employee payouts, and funds for two staff members to attend a training seminar.

County budget director Cheryl McVey says even with the amended budget the county is in a good financial position for the year.

“”We’ve already collected all but 15% of our projected revenue…and our expenditures %10 below where they should be,” McVey said. “Not taking any of that into account we’d still have a 17% ending fund balance if you approve this.”

The amendment was approved unanimously. The board also awarded a $3.5M bid for work on Beaverdale and Mediapolis roads to Norris Asphault Paving of Ottumwa. The project is expected to begin later this summer.
