The Burlington School Board met with the Iowa Construction Advocate Team to hear a proposal and consider the future of the school district.

Superintendent Pat Cohen stated that the district is seeing shrinking enrollment, as is many districts throughout the Midwest. Cohen said that Burlington has an aging demographic and the bottom line for the district is, fewer children are being born and that means less students in the districts schools.

The Iowa Construction Advocate Team works with schools to help them assess how they can re-align the buildings and resources they have to restructure to the changing needs of a community.

The Board listened to the information presented and decided that they would prefer to have a more in depth look at the facilities that the district has, the ICAT team had proposed only three buildings be assessed. The board will meet on June 3rd, at 2:15 PM right before graduation to consider the cost and scope of the updated proposal. The board was in full agreement that changes are required now to prevent the district from experiencing deficits in the near future.
