Authorities Investigating Body in River Near Keokuk

The Keokuk Police department is investigating a body that was discovered floating in the Mississippi River Thursday afternoon at around 4:30.

The Keokuk Fire Department, Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources also responded to the scene. The body was discovered about a mile north of lock and dam 19 and authorities say it was badly decomposed. An investigation is underway to identify the body. Police do say that no identification was possible, not even the sex of the victim at this time.

According to police, there are no known missing persons in the immediate area at this time. According to the Keokuk Police Department, an autopsy is scheduled for today at University of Iowa Hospital.
