Contractors working on renovations inadvertently set a Burlington home’s basement on fire Monday afternoon.

A press release from Fire Marshal Mark Crooks says a house at 2841 Bock Street was damaged when the basement caught fire. Fire crews were called to the scene shortly before 3 PM, after acetone was ignited by flames from a gas water heater.

Firefighters arrived within six minutes of being called, however the homeowner had already extinguished the flames. Damage was mostly contained to the room being remodeled and the area near the water heater. Crooks estimated the damage at around $10K. The home is insured.

Officials say the fire is being considered accidental.
