Obituaries Thursday June 21st

Dorothy Baker, age 94, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Oakview Nursing and Rehab (formerly Blair House) where she had lived the past three years.

Dorothy Mae (Lee) Baker was born February 21, 1924 in rural Wayne Township, Henry County, Iowa to Herbert and Mabel (Beauchamp) Lee. She graduated from Winfield Consolidated School, Winfield, Iowa, with the class of 1941.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Keith H. Baker at Kahoka, Missouri on June 14, 1941. Two children were born to this marriage, Joyce and Larry.

Dorothy worked at Sylvania and retired from F&M Bank, Burlington. She was a member of the West Burlington United Methodist Church and Golden Oldies. She enjoyed doing crafts and entered many craft shows. She was very fond of red cardinals, which was evident in her home décor and the many cardinal sweatshirts she wore.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Keith, parents, sister, Louise Beaman, brother Ivan Lee, daughter-in-law Suzie Baker and grandson John Baker.

Survivors include daughter Joyce Baker of Burlington; son Larry Baker of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren Ben, Dawn and Lydia; five great grandchildren; brother Harold Lee of Muscatine and sister Betty Huston of Winfield.

The Funeral service for Mrs. Baker will be 2:00 p.m. June 23rd at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Elizabeth Bell will officiate. Interment will be held in Scott Township Cemetery, Winfield, Iowa. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

Memorials have been established for West Burlington Methodist Church and Great River Hospice.

Larry Everett Miller, 73, Burlington, died at 9:10 PM Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at the Burlington Care Center.

Born April 4, 1945, in Burlington, the son of Everett Henry Miller and Florence Irene Schindall-Miller; the brother of Harold Lee and Karen Kay Miller; uncle of Melissa Miller-Rosenberg (Kevin) and Christopher Miller; great uncle of William, Benjamin and Maxwell Rosenberg, Dalen Prier and Quintin Miller. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harold Lee Miller, and one sister in-law, Rita Miller.

Mr. Miller was a 1963 graduate of Burlington High School; a 1965 graduate of Burlington Community College; attended Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville, MO and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986 from Upper Iowa University, Fayette, IA.

Mr. Miller was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and Methodist Men. He served as a member of Trustees, Memorial Committee, Staff Parish Relations Committee and President of United Methodist Men.

Mr. Miller served active duty during the Vietnam Era in the U.S. Navy from May 1967 to December 1972, with assignments on the USS Somers (DDG-34), Long Beach, CA, and at the Headquarters, Commander Naval Air Reserve, Glenview, IL.

Mr. Miller was employed in a variety of senior level civilian Human Resource positions with the Department of Defense, and the Department of Veterans Affairs in the United States (Lakeside Medical Center, Chicago, IL). He held positions with the Department of the Navy at the Naval Air Station and Chief of Naval Reserve Headquarters in New Orleans, LA; with the Department of the Army in Belgium and Ft. Meade, MD; and Department of Defense Headquarters (Pentagon) in Arlington, VA. Mr. Miller served as a civilian personnel specialist for the Department of the Army in Belgium providing support to the civilian employees of the NATO/Shape Support Group, Department of Defense Dependent Schools in Belgium and the Netherlands; and the Local National Work Force. He retired from the Department of Defense in 2000 with 33 years of service.

Mr. Miller enjoyed gardening, carpentry, photography, travel, genealogy, reading, opera, concerts, and spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Miller gave support to the ASPCA for animal welfare, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation for historical preservation, Human Right Campaign for LGBT issues, and the Mayo Clinic for cancer research.

A sister, Karen Miller, of Chicago, IL; his niece Melissa Miller-Rosenberg of Burlington; his nephew, Christopher Miller of Burlington; and his great nephews, William, Benjamin and Maxwell Rosenberg, Dalen Prier, and Quintin Miller of Burlington survive Mr. Miller.

Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Prugh’s Chapel, downtown.

The funeral service for Mr. Miller will be 2:00 PM, Friday, June 22, 2018 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Melisa Bracht-Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
