Obituaries Thursday, June 28th

Barbara Jean Davis, 82, of West Burlington, died Friday, June 22, 2018, at her home in West Burlington.

Born July 30, 1935, in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of Arthur Glen and Mary Ellen Humphrey Davis.

Barbara retired in 1993 after working as a RTA Dispatcher and Kitchen Coordinator for Des Moines County Community Action.

She was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church, were she helped as a secretary and taught Sunday School for several years. She was also a member of the Ladies Guild where she had served as president, secretary, and treasurer. She enjoyed bowling and was the past president of her Ladies Bowling League the “Gutter Dusters.”

Survivors include her dear friends, Curtis (Sally) James of West Burlington, and many others.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, and one aunt.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

There will be no visitation or services at this time.

Sherry Lee Nelson, 83, of Burlington, died at 7:25 AM Monday, June 25, 2018, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born December 19, 1934, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Herman and Ruby Meyer. On December 23, 1955, she married Daniel Martin Nelson in Burlington. He died on December 29, 2012.

Sherry retired from Antennacraft.

She was a graduate of Burlington High School.

She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Bears football fan. Sherry enjoyed reading, especially James Patterson books, watching crime shows, Tom Selleck films, eating lunch at Gators; but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include one son, Bryan (Becky) Nelson of Burlington; one daughter, Kim (Darren) Grimshaw of West Burlington; three grandchildren, Tyler Nelson, Breann (Zach) Christie, and Blake (Ashley) Nelson; two great-grandchildren, Caleigh and Kinsley, and one on the way.

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by one son, Jay.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends on Monday, July 2, 2018 at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.

A memorial has been established.

Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.

Helen L. Neal, 83, formerly of Burlington, went to be with the Lord at 1:23 PM Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at the Wesley Life Village in Indianola, Iowa.

Born June 1, 1935, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Chester “Pete” and Marie (Hahn) Mosena. On May 29, 1954, she married Ralph Earl Neal Jr. in Burlington. After 58 1/2 years of marriage, he died on February 8, 2013.

She graduated from Burlington High School.

Helen worked as waitress during her high school years. After her three children began school, she babysat teachers’ children for extra income. For three years, in the early 70’s, Helen & Ralph started their own business. It was a dry goods store in Holstein, Iowa. During the last 20 years, before retiring, they managed Ben Franklin Stores. Once they retired, they lived in Ankeny, Iowa & Torrance, California.

Over the years, she enjoyed sewing, making beautiful ceramic, especially dishes, outdoor animal figurines and Christmas Santas. Most of all, she enjoyed traveling with her siblings and having her grandchildren stay with her.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa Neal and Pam Swanson; one son; Mark (Liz) Neal; eight grandchildren, Trevor, Katie, Shad, and Aubrey Swanson, Ian, Nicole, Stephanie, and Lucas Neal; two great grandchildren, Ryder and Tegan Swanson; one brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, four sisters, and their spouses.

The memorial service for Mrs. Neal will be 1:00 PM Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for The Christian Worship Hour, Wesley Life Village, and Wesley Life Hospice.
