Virginia May McGinity, 93, of Burlington died 5:15 a.m. July 6, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.

Born October 30, 1924 in Burlington, Iowa she was the daughter of Rueben J. and Florence (Sheets) Bowman. She married Oscar L. McGinity on October 3, 1943 in Kahoka, Missouri. He died May 3, 2003.

Virginia was a homemaker. She previously worked at National Research, Great River Medical Center (BMC) and worked in the lunchroom at Corse School.

She loved camping, fishing, sewing and embroidery. She was an avid reader both books and on tablets and never missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune. She was notorious for her Sunday family dinners. She was a loving mother and enjoyed her time spent with her family.

Survivors include her six children; Oscar (Sandra) McGinity Jr. of Carman, Illinois, Thomas McGinity and James McGinity both of Burlington, Kenneth (Darla) McGinity of Ozark, Alabama, Debra (Kevin) Ryner and Michael McGinity both of Burlington; 17 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters and six brothers.

The funeral service for Mrs. McGinity will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 9th at Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Ron Jewett will officiate. Interment will be held in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, July 8th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends.

A memorial has been established for Disabled American Veterans.

James “Jim” Michael Vincent Whalen, 69, of Morning Sun, died at 5:53 PM Thursday, July 5, 2018.

Born July 7, 1948, in New Rochelle, NY, he was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Kelly Whalen.

He worked at Eagle Supermarket in Burlington for 25 years as a stocker. He also worked at Experion Metro Mills in Mt. Pleasant for five-and-a-half years as a machine operator.

He graduated from New Rochelle High School in New York.

He enjoyed fishing, reading books, cruising and writing letters.

Survivors include two daughters, Chris Jeschke of Las Cruis, NM; Candi (Gary) Hawkins of Morning Sun; one son, Chad Boline of Iowa City; three grandchildren: Whitney Hawkins, Kent Savage II, and Alexis Scott; three great-grandchildren: Navaeh Savage, Kent Savage III, and Konner Savage; and one step-brother, Robert (Marion) Thomas of Palm Coast, FL.

He was preceded in death by his partner Barbara Boline Whalen, his parents, one brother, Edward Whalen, and one sister, Rita Moore.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

There will be no visitation or services.

Garrett “Dean” Crow, age 77 of Mediapolis, died Friday July 6, 2018 at Prairie Ridge Care Center. The son of Garrett and Dorothy (Burgus) Crow, he was born October 17, 1940 in rural Mediapolis .On July 8, 1961 he married Katherine Copeland.
He was a graduate of the Morning Sun High School. He served in the US Army from 1959-1962 in Korea. He worked for Winegard Company for 37 years, retiring in 2000.
He was a member of the Mediapolis United Methodist Church. He was a Boy Scout committeeman, served on the Mediapolis Fire Dept. and was a member of Ducks Unlimited.
Survivors include; his wife of Mediapolis; daughter Julie (Tom) Cox of Durant, Iowa; four grandchildren, Christofer and Miranda Cox of Durant and Nickolas and Brooke Crow of Burlington; three brothers, Dale (Kathy) Crow, Rochelle, Illinois; Dennis Crow, Morning Sun; Dan (Melody) Crow, Oakville; three sisters, Doris (Crotty) Griffin, Wapello; Darla Smith, Mt. Pleasant; Denise Gram, Burlington; special cousin Betty Allen, Arvada, CO; nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins;
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Brent Crow, brother Donald Crow and sister Donna Schrader.
A memorial service will be Monday July 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mediapolis United Methodist Church, Rev. Bruce Smith officiating. According to his wishes, cremation has been accorded and burial will be at a later date at Kossuth cemetery. Memorials to Hospice, Mediapolis Ambulance and Ducks Unlimited have been established.

Brian Despain, 70, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa died 9:25 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2018 at his home.

Born August 6, 1947 in Iowa City, Iowa he was the son of Willis N. and Thelma Gwen (Hutchcroft) Despain.

He married Linda Sawyer on May 5, 1978 in Oquawka, Illinois.

Brian was a graduate of Mediapolis High School and attended Culver Academy Military School in Culver, Indiana. He worked for Wal-Mart Distribution in Mt. Pleasant for over 15 years. He was of the Methodist faith.

He loved to fish, was a gun enthusiast, collected coins and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Survivors include his wife Linda Despain of Mt. Pleasant; seven children, Tami Despain and Laura Despain both of Salem, Iowa, Pamela Hill of Burlington, Robert (Deanna) Thomason of Burlington, Brian (Michelle) Despain Jr. of North Richland, Texas, Tara Despain of Rockford, Illinois and Chad Despain of Port Richey, Florida; 17 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and one sister Gwen ( Fred) Scholer of Burlington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Brandy in infancy and one sister Nancy Miller.

Private graveside services and interment for Mr. Despain will be held at Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.
