Burlington School Board Talks Legislative Priorities at Monday’s Meeting

Preparations for the coming school year continued for the Burlington Community School District at Monday night’s board meeting.

One item on the agenda was deciding on the district’s legislative priorities for the Iowa Association of School Boards. Tom Courtney put his legislative experience to use and asked why the IASB couldn’t put more focus on only one goal.

“Mr. Courtney thinks it would be better if the ISBA just said  here’s one thing that we need, and his one thing was the huge corporate tax breaks,” Courtney’s argument was summed up by District Superintendent Pat Coen. “He said if they would stop that one thing, it would be enough money to do all the things listed as priorities.”

Coen says otherwise the meeting was pretty typical for this time of year.

“Renewing contracts…an example is every year you agree with Iowa, Iowa State, Western Illinois, to allow their student teachers to come in,” he says annual contracts were also approved with food vendors.

The board also approved the high school handbook, and a new contract for athletic training services with Universal Fitness. The first day of school for the district is August 23rd.
