Obituaries for Tuesday July 17th

Ronald Ray “RJ” Jackson, 76, of Danville passed away on July 13, 2018 at Great River Hospice House. Born August 28, 1941 in Grandview, Iowa, he was the son of Melvin “Sox” and Edith (Hingst) Jackson.

He married Delores Yaley on April 27, 1963.

Ron held many titles throughout his life including truck driver, heavy equipment operator, business owner, field tiler, salesman, racecar driver, track promoter, and US Army soldier. The Jackson family along with Al Samberg built 34 Raceway in 1965. Ron ran his first race there on opening night in 1966. He began racing Jalopies, then raced Sprint Cars, and spent the majority of his racing career driving Late Models. Ron won over 200 features in his lifetime and always gave his fans something to cheer about. His most prestigious wins were two Iowa State Fair Championships, and The Miller 100. When Ron’s racing career came to an end, he became the promoter at 34 Raceway and was recognized as “Promoter of the Year” in 1999. Ron was a great friend to many and never knew a stranger. His greatest days were spent on the race track and with his family and friends.

Ron is survived by his wife, Delores, daughter, Kelli (Rusty) Vaughn of Paxton, Illinois, son, Chris of Danville, granddaughter, Kelsey Vaughn, two brothers, Gene (Ruth) Jackson of Wapello, and Ken (Rosie) Jackson of Burlington, brothers in law and sisters in law, Jim (Linda) Yaley and Gary (JoAnn) Yaley of Denmark, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Rowdy.

Friends may call after noon on Thursday, July 19th at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 20th at Lunning Chapel with Mr. Ned Fry officiating. Military rites will be held following the service by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Cremation has been accorded, and the Inurnment will be held at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial to the family has been established and may be sent in care of Lunning Chapel, 2620 Mt. Pleasant Street, Burlington, IA 52601.

Frances Geneva Hartman, 102, of West Burlington, died at 8:50 AM Monday, July 16, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born September 21, 1915, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harry J. and Bertha R. Shullaw Wickhart. On December 1, 1951, she married Leo Edward in Burlington, Iowa. He passed on November 3, 2006.

She was of Methodist faith. She enjoyed art work, painting, and sewing. She was a great cook.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda J. Kelley of Henderson, NV; three grandsons, Kevin (Pam) Peterson and Jarrin Peterson both of Burlington, and Brian Beebe of Birmingham, IA; five great-grandchildren: Nathan (Randee) Peterson, Grant Peterson, Jacob Peterson and two others all of Burlington; one sister and one brother.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and three brothers.

The graveside committal service for Mrs. Hartman will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Patricia Rhea Aaberg (Hallowell), 69, died peacefully after a brief illness in Corinth, Mississippi on April 6, 2018.

Pat was born on January 18, 1949 in Muscatine, Iowa to Henry (Hank) Rhea and Lillian Marie (Green) Hallowell. She graduated from La Harpe High School in 1967. She graduated from the College of the Ozarks with two degrees in teaching. In 1974, she joined the Army and was assigned to Fort Dix where she served as a Recreational Specialist. She was transferred to Tripler Army Base in Hawaii and was honorably discharged as an Staff Sergeant. Due to injuries sustained while on Active Duty, she was designated as a disabled veteran.

She received her master’s degree while in Hawaii in 1982. She moved to Fruitland Park, Florida on a permanent basis in 2001 where she cared for her mother until her death in 2007. She was a member of the American Legion Post 219 in Fruitland Park. On November 9, 2004 (Veteran’s Day), she married Donald Martin Aaberg. They moved from Florida to Adamsville, Tennessee in 2010.

Pat had a passion for painting. She painted many pictures for family and friends, specializing in pastels. She was known for her quick wit, infectious smile, magnetic personality and her kind and compassionate spirit.

Pat was preceded in death by her father, Hank, her mother, Marie and her brother, Donald W. Hallowell and her stepson William Aaberg. She is survived by her husband Donald, and her beloved grandchild Liberty Jane Bean and many lifelong friends including Margaret Haecherl of Nashville, TN, Kathy Butler of Blandinsville, Ill., and Betty Quigle of Smyrna, TN.
