Obituaries Saturday August 25th

Frederick Clyde West Sr., 84, of Burlington, IA, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, IA.

He was born July 28, 1934 at the Burlington Hospital. His parents were Percy Harmon and Minnie Sourwine. He was raised by Walter D. West and Minnie Sourwine West Ballard in the Oakville area. His stepfather was Robert Ballard.

He was a member of Latty Evangelical Church. He started school at Huron School, then attended Latty one room school through eighth grade. He went to Oak Street School in Burlington, IA his freshman year then transferred to Sperry Consolidated School his Sophomore year and graduated there in 1952.

He married Iowna Kay Russell in 1954. They divorced. He married Rita Frederick in 1973.

He worked many jobs but ended his career as a salesman for Sweetheart Bakery after 30 years. He enjoyed his family, gardening (well known for his tomatoes) his ’56 Ford, Smith Auctions, and was very proud that he donated 200 pints of whole blood. He was the family photographer.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; six children, Pamela Walz (Larry Covington) of Mt. Vernon, IA, Rhonda (Richard) Rowe of Jonesburg, MO, Fred West Jr. (Abby) of Mediapolis, IA, Walter “Wally” (Seanne) West of Sperry, IA, Curtiss (Kellie) West of Burlington, IA and Carla Dee (Edward) Shannon of Bartlett, IL; sixteen grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Marie West Wolbers of New Port Richey, FL; one brother, Robert (Martha) Ballard of Wytheville, VA; ex-spouse, Iowna Kay West of Burlington, IA; son in law, Tom Walz of Burlington, IA; many nieces, nephews, and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Ben West, and one grandson, Jordan Frederick West.

The graveside memorial service for Mr. West will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 25th at Latty Cemetery. Rev. George Rogerson will officiate. Visitation will be 5:30-7:00 p.m., Friday, August 24th at Lunning Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Latty Cemetery.

Ivan Merle Hunter, 93, of Cedar Falls, formerly New London, died Monday, August 20th in Cedar Falls.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 September 8th at Elliott Chapel with Pastor David Mixon officiating. The family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00. Inurnment for Ivan and Shirley Hunter will follow the service at Burge Cemetery. Military rites presented by Henry County Honor Guard. Virgina M. Cleland, 89, of Burlington, died at 8:58 PM Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at the Great River Klein’s Center in West Burlington.

Born June 23, 1929, in Broomall, PA, she was the daughter of Alvin and Mary Britton Cleland. She married Donald R. Mackie in Topeka, KS, they later divorced.

She retired from the Burlington Basket Company, where she worked for 30 years.

She graduated from Broomall High School in Pennsylvania.

She was of Christian faith. She enjoyed gardening and reading and loved to spend time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Rick (Vicki) Mackie of Port Charlotte, FL, Jeff (Kathy) Mackie of Burlington, and Tom Mackie of Norwich, England; 7 grandchildren: Jenny (Opie) Stark, Sara Mackie (Kody), Josh Mackie (Brit), Matthew Riffel (Mike), Erin Riffel (Mike), Jessie Mackie and Brandon Mackie; 6 great-grandchildren: Alex, Avery, Lawson, Josie, Mason and Sienna; one brother, Jack (Mary) Cleland of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Connie, and her twin sister, Jeanett.

Memorial services and burial will be held at a later date.
