Obituaries for Tuesday September 18th

Janet H. Smith, 84, of Burlington passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at her home, after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Born December 11, 1933 in West Liberty, Iowa, she was the daughter of Dr. Edward E. and Naomi (Musser) Hale. She married Dr. Gary Smith on September 18, 1955 in West Liberty. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1996.

Janet graduated from West Liberty High School in 1951 and from the University of Iowa in 1955 with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She worked as a nursing supervisor at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics until her retirement in 1964.

She was a member of West Hill United Methodist Church. She was a 50 year member of Lotus Chapter O.E.S. of West Liberty, a lifetime Girl Scout and belonged to the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Her many hobbies included traveling, entertaining, golfing, bowling, and in her younger years, playing 6 on 6 basketball. She had a passion for sea turtle rescues, and above all loved taking care of her family.

Survivors include son Craig (Julie) Smith and grandchildren, Adam, Hannah, Samantha, and Josh of Burlington; son Brian (Renee) Smith and granddaughter Ruthie of Burlington; daughter Dr. Suzanne (Christopher) Bradbury and grandchildren Regan, Lance, and Lucas of San Diego, CA; sister Mae (Robert) Collins of Ft. Myers, FL; and brother Dr. James Hale of Boonville, AR.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Michele Smith, sister, Ruth Skelley and brother, Edward Hale.

The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 20th at Lunning Chapel. Rev. David Bracht-Wagner will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Eastern Star Rites will be at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 19th at Lunning Chapel, with visitation to follow 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Virginia Marie Knopp, 97, of Burlington, died at 5:18 PM Sunday, September 16, 2018, at the Great River Klein Center in West Burlington.

Born February 4, 1921, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Harry Ferdinand and Marie Winifred Patch Burk. On December 9, 1945, she married Paul Edward in Aledo, Illinois.

She worked as a secretary for the planning and zoning board of West Burlington and the Hawkeye.

She was a Burlington High School graduate and a graduate of Woodruff Business College.

Virginia was a member of First United Church of Christ. She was an Elder at the Church and on the Consistory, as well as, a member of AARP, Ruth Circle, 4-H, a Boy Scout assistant leader, Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and was treasurer of Women’s Fellowship. She enjoyed reading, eating chocolate and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Craig E. (Claudia) Knopp of Murrieta, CA; one daughter, Beth E. (Mike) Wiley of Lomax, IL; five grandchildren: Ryan (Caroline) Jones of Danville, Zachary (Molly) Weyrick of Wasraw,IL, Curtis (Brooke) Knopp of California, Carrie (Bill) Klain of Arizona, Cameron Knopp of California; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and special friends Terry and George VanHagen.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and one granddaughter.

As per Virginia’s request, she has donated her body to The University of Iowa Hospital for research.

A memorial service will be held for Virginia at a later date and a Graveside Committal Service will be at Keokuk National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Linda J. “Lynn” Huss, 67, of Gladstone, Illinois died September 15, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Born July 4, 1951 in Burlington, Iowa she was the daughter of Stanley and Celine (Powell) Fisher. She married Charles J. Huss on June 19, 1970 in Burlington, Iowa.

Lynn was a production operator for I.A.A.P. for 20 years. She retired in 2003. She also worked at the Burlington Basket Factory, and was a part-time janitor at West Central Middle School. She was a graduate of Burlington Notre Dame High School.

In 1967 she helped organize the Burlington Ski Kats. She was show coordinator for 4 years and served as queen twice at Kenny’s Roller Ranch. She competed for Fort Madison Rodeo Queen in 1969. She was in the choir at St. Paul Catholic School for 8 years and was excellent in track at Burlington Notre Dame. She received many awards in water skiing (jump, trick and slalom). She was a member of Iowa National Barrel Horse Association District 5 and an extensive award winner at horse shows such as Lomax Saddle Club and Des Moines Saddle Club just to name a few.

She is survived by her husband Charles Huss of Gladstone, Illinois; two daughters, Dawn (Mike) Akers and Amy (Brian) Bole both of Gladstone, Illinois; two sisters, Pat (Mike) Clawson of Pell Lake, Wisconsin and Nancy (Dan) Dvorsky of Rio Rancho, NM; three granddaughters, Brooke (Dustin Vancil) Akers, Brianna Akers and Nikki Bole and one grandson Justin Bole.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 20th at Lunning Chapel. Cremation will be accorded following visitation.

Reception to follow at Gladstone Community Building in Gladstone, IL.

A memorial has been established for Iowa National Barrel Horse Association District 5 Senior Awards.
