State officials say the unemployment rate has dropped again — to the lowest level in more than 18 years.

The unemployment rate across the state dropped to 2.5% for August, Iowa Workforce Development’s Director Beth Townsend says people are working together to develop new skills.

“As the unemployment rate continues to drop, Iowans are coming together as never before to find ways to help more Iowans get upskilled as demonstrated by the more than 1,900 community and business leaders who are attending Future Ready Iowa summits,” Townsend said.

One such Future Ready Skills summit will be held in Burlington on Tuesday at the Comfort Inn and Suites. Governor Kim Reynolds will be in attendance for the event, which is aiming to get 70% of working Iowans to pursue education or training beyond a high school diploma by 2025.

Locally, the unemployment rate was 3.1% for July, the rate for August will be available next week.
