Obituaries Thursday November 1st

Verona M. Dean, 88, of Burlington passed away on October 28, 2018. She was the daughter of Lavern Triplett and Verna Martha Lawson.

Survivors include one daughter, Teresa Vaughn; one grandson, Andre Vaughn; two sisters, Frances Thomas and Evelyn Wilkerson; two brothers, Larry Miles and James Jones; nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Terry Vaughn.

A celebration of life service will be at Union Baptist Church, Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with a repass following.

Ruth C. Stein, 89, of Burlington, died Sunday, October 28, 2018 at Bickford Cottage.

Born June 24, 1929 in Burlington, IA, she was the daughter of Sam and Sonia L. Chanen. She married Irvin M. Stein on March 27, 1949 in Burlington, IA. He preceded her in death on June 18, 2015.

Ruth graduated from Burlington High School and Northwestern University. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Temple Israel, T.T.T., the Rotary Club and the Hetta Gilbert Society. She served as Past Matron of EC Blackmar #306 O.E.S., Past Grand Organist of the Grand Chapter of Iowa O.E.S. and Past President of the Burlington United Way. She was recognized as Woman of the Year by the Girl Scouts of America.

Survivors include two sons, Loren C. Stein of Burlington and Randall C. Stein of Northglenn, CO; granddaughter, Amy (Vic) Wirtz of Cleveland, OH; two great grandchildren, Andrew and Laura and a brother, Frank Chanen of Chicago, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of sixty-six years, Irvin; and daughter Elaine Patterson and her husband Amos.

The funeral service for Mrs. Stein will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 1st at Lunning Chapel. Interment will follow in the Burlington Jewish Cemetery. The Order of the Eastern Star Rite will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 31st at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service until 8:00 p.m.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Thomas Russell Wayman, 59, of Burlington, died at 10:05 PM Thursday, October 25, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

Born January 16, 1959, he was the son of Charles Russell and Dorothy Farrell Wayman. On September 4, 1982, he married Leslie Gilmer of Rolling Meadows, IL.

He started his career in the grocery industry at Eagle Foods and more recently worked at the Hy-vee in Burlington.

Thomas was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He enjoyed classic rock, reading and WWI and WWII history. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter Paisley.

Survivors include his wife, Leslie; one son, Brandon Wayman of Red Wing, MN; one daughter, Lauren (Adam) Moyers of West Burlington; granddaughter, Paisley Moyers, and one grandchild on the way; one brother, Mike (Nancy) Wayman of Maricopa, AZ; one sister, Candy (Don) Olson of Anchorage, AK; three nieces and three nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 5:00 PM, Thursday, November 1, 2018 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home.

The memorial service for Tom will be 5:00 PM Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Rev. Ryan Cosgrove officiating.

A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.

Edward C. Eland , 78, of Burlington, died Saturday, October 27, 2018, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington; one year to the date of his wife’s passing.

Born October 29, 1939, in Monmouth, IL, he was the son of Hope Leander and Gayle Lonina Carter Eland. On March 8, 1969, he married Betty Rosaline Vass in Las Vegas, NV. She passed on October 27, 2017.

Ed enjoyed fishing and trains. He had a curiosity for how things worked and could fix anything that moved. He liked traveling, especially with his wife; his favorite trips being to Turkey and Italy.

Survivors include his two daughters, Dawn Fedor of Missouri and Laurie (Steve) Rathbun of Wever; step-son, Frank (Michele) Kiener of Norwalk, IA; step-daughter, Lana (Richard) Butler of Norfolk, VA; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elizabeth G. Wasson and Caryl Kerr both of Mt. Pleasant.

Following the service, cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory.

The funeral service for Ed will be 1:00 PM Friday, November 2, 2018, at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Dean Graber officiating. Burial will be in Moss Ridge Cemetery with his wife, Betty, at a later date.
